Summary: This study found that midlife obesity measures were associated with decline in kidney function among White and Black women over 30 years of follow-up, but the association was less consistent in men. Obesity indicators were independently associated with risk for kidney failure with replacement therapy for all sex-race groups except White men. Loss to follow-up during the study period was a limitation.

Summary: This study assessed the within- and between-subject variability of untargeted metabolomic measurements in human serum samples. The results showed that over half of the metabolic features were fairly stable over a period of 100 days. This has important implications for the interpretation of metabolomic results.

Summary: The ARIC project, initiated in 1987, focuses on community-based surveillance for myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease, aiming to understand the decline in CHD mortality and identify determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis and CHD in middle-aged Black and White adults. Through research in areas such as health disparities, genomics, heart failure, and prevention, ARIC has published over 2,300 papers with significant clinical impact, highlighting the importance of population-based research in improving health.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the influence of diabetes on the progression from preclinical heart failure (HF) stages to overt HF. The results showed that uncontrolled diabetes was significantly associated with the risk of HF progression. Therefore, early intervention and treatment of diabetes are critical in the process of HF.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the presence of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) were associated with dementia in elderly black individuals, while there was no significant association between NSVT and dementia in white individuals. Further research and elucidation of underlying mechanisms are warranted.

Summary: This study evaluates whether the association between prediabetes and dementia can be explained by the development of diabetes. It is found that there is an association between prediabetes and dementia risk, but this association can be explained by the subsequent development of diabetes. The age of onset of diabetes is significantly associated with dementia risk.

Summary: This study explored the implications of variable obstruction (VO) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and compared them with individuals without obstruction. The findings suggested that there is a significant risk for future development of COPD in individuals with pre-bronchodilator airflow obstruction, supporting the consideration of expanding spirometric criteria defining COPD to include pre-bronchodilator obstruction.

Summary: This study found that hearing loss is associated with loneliness and social network characteristics among older adults. Worse pure tone average was associated with a higher prevalence of moderate or greater loneliness. Better speech-in-noise recognition was associated with greater social network characteristics. Worse hearing-related quality of life was associated with a higher prevalence of moderate or greater loneliness and worse social network characteristics.
