Summary: From 1986 to 1991, 4831 men from Estonia were sent to clean up radioactively contaminated areas near Chernobyl. The study compared their cancer incidence rates to that of the male population of Estonia. It was found that there was an excess of radiation-related cancers combined, but not when smoking- and alcohol-related cancers were excluded. Less educated workers had a higher risk of all cancers and smoking-related cancers. An elevated risk of alcohol-related cancers was evident 15 to 24 years after return from the Chernobyl area.

Summary: Sacral insufficiency fracture (SIF) should be considered in elderly and osteoporotic patients with back and pelvic pain. MRI with coronal STIR imaging is recommended for diagnosing SIF. Sacroplasty provides better and faster pain relief compared to conservative management.

Summary: Recent research from Nordic countries identified occupational physical activity (OPA) as a risk factor for disability pension, but further research in novel populations is needed. This study aimed to assess the association between OPA and disability pension using administrative data. The results showed that participants exposed to higher levels of OPA had a higher risk for disability pension in an exposure-response fashion, highlighting the need for preventative measures for workers with high physical work demands.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of Pyrocardan (R) arthroplasty for treating trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis. The results showed significant improvements in clinical scores and X-ray findings after surgery, with stable results during the follow-up period. The incidence of complications was low, and the implant had a high survival rate.

Summary: This case report describes a 65-year-old female patient with patchy chorioretinal atrophy (PCA) progressing to macular intrachoroidal cavitation (ICC) over a 4-year follow-up. The lesion gradually expanded, leading to decreased visual acuity. OCT images revealed thinning of the sensory retina and disappearance of the RPE-Bruch's membrane complex.

Summary: This study developed a methodology for human biomonitoring, based on SP-ICP-MS, to assess the exposure of workers involved in nanomaterial activities. The results showed the presence of ENPs in both workers and controls, suggesting that extra-professional exposure is a potential source of ENPs.

Summary: It was found that workers exposed to metal fumes had an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which was correlated with decreased serum adiponectin levels. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the impact of heavy metal exposure on adiponectin levels.

Summary: This study aimed to monitor contamination by antineoplastic drugs on work surfaces in a compounding unit for 4 years. By analyzing the contamination rate, critical incidents, and safety measures, it was found that the overall contamination rate decreased after the unit's opening and the implementation of corrective actions.

Summary: In this study of World Trade Center rescue/recovery workers, overall mortality rates were lower than expected. However, significantly increased mortality risks were observed in certain sub-groups with high exposure, highlighting the need for further investigation.

Summary: This study followed up with patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for 4 years to examine changes in efficacy outcomes, defense style questionnaire (DSQ) scores, and clinical features. The study also analyzed the relationship between efficacy levels and changes in patients' psychological defense mechanisms. The findings suggest that abnormal psychological defense mechanisms play a significant role in OCD, and the use of mature defense mechanisms is associated with treatment efficacy.

Summary: This study reports the safety and efficacy of a novel intracerebral gene therapy in children with Sanfilippo B over a 5.5-year follow-up. While the treatment showed a good safety profile, adverse events were reported and enzyme activity remained detectable in the cerebrospinal fluid, suggesting a lack of acquired tolerance. Patients showed varying levels of neurocognitive evolution, with the youngest patient showing milder disease progression and better cognitive outcomes.

Summary: The concept of intrinsic capacity, specifically in the domains of mobility and psychological well-being, is crucial for assessing the health and well-being of older adults. Satisfactory levels of intrinsic capacity in these domains are associated with reduced mortality risk. Integration of the concept of intrinsic capacity into clinical practice is recommended for improving the care of older adults.

Summary: Data from a 5-year follow-up of outcomes after transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of severe mitral regurgitation in patients with heart failure demonstrate that this procedure, in addition to medical therapy, leads to lower rates of hospitalization for heart failure and all-cause mortality compared to medical therapy alone.
