Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of age on diabetes incidence by general and central adiposity after 3-year follow-up in adults with prediabetes. Methods: Data were taken from a cohort of 1,184 subjects with prediabetes included in The Cohort Study in Primary Health Care on the Evolution of Patients with Prediabetes (PREDAPS). General adiposity was defined using body mass index (BMI), and central adiposity was defined with waist circumference and waist to height ratio. Data were analyzed by age groups 30 to 59 and 60 to 74 years. The association between adiposity and diabetes incidence was assessed using hazard ratios (HR). Results: Adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyles, and metabolic parameters, diabetes HR for central adiposity based on the waist circumference clinical cutoff were 2.14 (1.12-4.09) and 1.48 (0.80-2.74) for people aged 30 to 59 and 60 to 74 years, respectively. In the model additionally adjusted for BMI, diabetes HR were 2.65 (1.24-5.65) and 1.33 (0.68-2.59), respectively. The use of a 1-SD increase rather than cutoff points did not alter this pattern. Similar findings were observed with central adiposity based on waist to height ratio. Conclusions: The association of central adiposity with type 2 diabetes incidence was lower for people in the older age group than for those in the younger age group.

Low Percentage of Vegetable Fat in Red Blood Cells Is Associated with Worse Glucose Metabolism and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes

Gemma Chiva-Blanch, Oriol Giro, Montserrat Cofan, Alfonso L. Calle-Pascual, Elias Delgado, Ramon Gomis, Amanda Jimenez, Josep Franch-Nadal, Gemma Rojo Martinez, Emilio Ortega

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the association between fatty acids in red blood cell membranes and incident type 2 diabetes in a Spanish population. The results showed that lower percentages of certain fatty acids and higher percentages of others were associated with worse glucose metabolism. Higher percentages of certain fatty acids were also associated with lower risk of diabetes. Dietary patterns rich in vegetables were independently associated with lower risk of glucose regulation deterioration and incident diabetes.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the degree and factors related to non-insulin antidiabetic drug adherence in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated in primary care centers in Spain. Results showed that adherence to NIADs was suboptimal, with higher adherence among metformin users and lower adherence among thiazolidinedione users. HbA1c and ARMS-e items could be used as indicators to encourage treatment changes for improving T2DM control.

Outcome of COVID-19 infection in people with diabetes mellitus or obesity in the primary care setting in Catalonia, Spain: A retrospective cohort study of the initial three waves

Didac Mauricio, Bogdan Vlacho, Emilio Ortega, Xavier Cos-Claramunt, Manel Mata-Cases, Jordi Real, Berta Fernandez-Camins, Josep Franch-Nadal

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and risk factors for fatal and non-fatal events among COVID-19 infected subjects with obesity or diabetes during the initial three epidemiological waves in the region. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a primary care database to identify individuals with COVID-19, stratifying them based on diabetes mellitus or obesity. Results showed that fatal events were more common among individuals with diabetes, particularly during the first wave. The number of study events decreased in the second and third waves. Diabetes was found to be a risk factor for fatal events, while obesity was only a risk factor when adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, and COVID-19 waves. HIV, cancer, and autoimmune diseases were also identified as risk factors for mortality among subjects with COVID-19 in the fully-adjusted model.

Summary: This study found that arterial hypertension, high HbA1c levels, microalbuminuria, high LDL-cholesterol, high TC/HDL-C index, high non-HDL-C/HDL-C index, the use of statins, and high body mass index are the main factors influencing the development of diabetic retinopathy. Conversely, high HDL-cholesterol levels and the use of fibrates have a protective effect.
