In this study, healthy adolescents consumed either (i) a low glycaemic index breakfast cereal meal or (ii) a high glycaemic index breakfast cereal meal, before completing a test of verbal episodic memory in which the memory materials were encoded under conditions of divided attention. Analysis of remembering/forgetting indices revealed that the high glycaemic index breakfast group remembered significantly more items relative to the low glycaemic index breakfast group after a long delay. The superior performance observed in the high glycaemic index group, relative to the low glycaemic index group, may be due to the additional glucose availability provided by the high glycaemic index meal at the time of memory encoding. This increased glucose availability may be necessary for effective encoding under dual task conditions.

Effects of Chewing Gum on Nitric Oxide Metabolism, Markers of Cardiovascular Health and Neurocognitive Performance after a Nitrate-Rich Meal

Sharon Ong, Nicola P. Bondonno, Luke A. Downey, Andrew Scholey, Michael A. Smith, Con Stough, Lauren C. Blekkenhorst, Richard Woodman, Kevin D. Croft, Jonathan M. Hodgson, Catherine P. Bondonno

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of chewing gum after a nitrate-rich meal on nitrate metabolism, endothelial function, blood pressure, neurocognitive performance, mood, and anxiety. The study found that chewing gum after a nitrate-rich meal resulted in an acute improvement in endothelial function and a small increase in blood pressure, but had no significant effects on neurocognitive function, mood, or anxiety.

Effect of urine-specific gravity on performance of bacteriuria in predicting urine culture results

M. Torre, E. Furrow, J. D. Foster

Summary: The study included 481 dogs and 291 cats to determine the effect of urine-specific gravity on using microscopic evaluation of bacteriuria to predict urine culture results. Results showed that urine specific gravity, presence of pyuria, and species all had an impact on the agreement between microscopic bacteriuria and culture results. Samples with rod bacteria were more likely to have bacterial growth compared to cocci, and urine microscopy had high specificity in predicting culture results.

Efficacy of probucol on cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease: study protocol for a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised phase II trial (PIA study)

Summary: Studies indicate that abnormal metabolism of amyloid beta (Aβ) in the peripheral circulation is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Probucol, a cholesterol-lowering drug, has been shown to suppress Aβ secretion and protect cognitive function. This study aims to investigate whether Probucol can attenuate cognitive decline, delay brain atrophy, and reduce cerebral amyloid burden in patients with mild-to-moderate AD.

Data-driven workflow for the preemptive detection of excess water producing wells drilled in unconventional shales

Yusuf Falola, Siddharth Misra, Jonathan Foster, Mukul Bhatia

Summary: This study focuses on developing a data-driven workflow to identify high water-producing wells in unconventional shale formations and determine the source of excess water production. Utilizing unsupervised and supervised learning on conventional well logs from Gulf Coast and Fort Worth basins, this research uses clustering methods to generate pseudo-lithology and classification techniques to pinpoint excess water sources. Additionally, the study reveals sources of excess water in Fort Worth and Gulf Coast basins - highly water-wet and low thermally matured shale in Fort Worth basin, and absence of bituminous, pyrite-bearing shales in Gulf Coast basin.

Organised Clairvoyance: Supranational Surveillance and Controlled Borderlessness in H. G. Wells's A Modern Utopia

Jonathan Foster

Summary: This essay analyzes H.G. Wells's novel "A Modern Utopia" and argues that Wells's ideas about controlled borderlessness were highly prescient, anticipating the rise of supranational mobility control. It also highlights the discrepancies and discordant notes in Wells's bureaucratic-technocratic utopian vision.

Surface displacement expression of progressive failure in a sensitive clay landslide observed with long-term UAV monitoring

Michael J. J. Bentley, Jonathan M. M. Foster, Joshua J. J. Potvin, George Bevan, James Sharp, David J. J. Woeller, W. Andy Take

Summary: This passage discusses the susceptibility of river bank slopes incised into Champlain Sea Clay to highly retrogressive landslides and the concept of progressive failure. It explores whether surface displacement measurements can serve as an indicator of potential expansion of a progressive failure surface. The monitoring program conducted on an inclined slope found that sufficient pre-failure deformations exist to be measurable precursors to progressive failure.

Controlling the Composition and Position of Metal-Organic Frameworks via Reactive Inkjet Printing

David Alexander Gregory, Joshua Nicks, Joaquin Artigas-Arnaudas, Michael S. Harris, Jonathan A. Foster, Patrick J. Smith

Summary: Reactive inkjet printing (RIJ) is a new approach for patterning surfaces with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). It allows stable solutions of different ligand and metal ions to be combined, offering advantages over conventional inkjet printing. The optimization of stoichiometry, printing of various frameworks, and creation of gradients in printed MOFs are demonstrated using the RIJ approach. This method shows potential for enhancing the use of MOFs in various applications.
