Cobalamin deficiency can lead to several adverse health consequences: folate trapping in the methylation cycle and subsequent impaired DNA biosynthesis; pernicious anemia hematologically, similar to that caused by folate deficiency; elevated blood homocysteine (tHcy) (risk factor for cardiovascular disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes); and neural tube defects (NTDs). Population-wide folate status is expected to improve where folic acid fortification policies for reducing NTD occurrence are established. However, there is concern that cobalamin deficiency and its characteristic neuropathy could be masked when hematological abnormalities in risk groups such as the elderly and vegetarians are reversed through folic acid supplementation. Folate-cobalamin interactions and their impact on health are reviewed here.

Maternal Folic Acid Deficiency Is Associated to Developing Nasal and Palate Malformations in Mice

Estela Maldonado, Elena Martinez-Sanz, Teresa Partearroyo, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras, Juliana Perez-Miguelsanz

Summary: This study demonstrates that maternal folate deficiency can lead to various craniofacial malformations in embryos, with a higher risk of affecting cleft palate and nasal region development. The results show a significant reduction in the number of fetuses over time under FAD diet, along with various severe abnormalities, with nasal region dysmorphologies being the most frequent.

Nutritional Status in Spanish Adults with Celiac Disease Following a Long-Term Gluten-Free Diet Is Similar to Non-Celiac

Catalina Ballestero-Fernandez, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras, Natalia Ubeda, Elena Alonso-Aperte

Summary: Individuals with celiac disease following a long-term gluten-free diet have deficiencies in several key nutrients, including folates, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin E, iodine, and iron. Some celiac patients may be more at risk for osteopenia and osteoporosis. However, the overall nutritional status and dietary patterns of celiac individuals did not significantly differ from those of healthy volunteers in the study population. Regular monitoring and assessment of nutrient levels should be conducted in the celiac population.

Early Appearance of Epicardial Adipose Tissue through Human Development

Juliana Perez-Miguelsanz, Vanesa Jimenez-Ortega, Pilar Cano-Barquilla, Marta Garaulet, Ana Esquifino, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras, Pilar Fernandez-Mateos

Summary: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) originates early in embryonic development and goes through five stages including angiogenesis and the appearance of adipocytes. Factors such as maternal health and nutrition may influence the early development of EAT, which has clinical implications for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Effects of Supplementation with Folic Acid and Its Combinations with Other Nutrients on Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Narrative Review

Ana M. Puga, Mar Ruperto, M. de Lourdes Samaniego-Vaesken, Ana Montero-Bravo, Teresa Partearroyo, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras

Summary: Cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's Disease are major public health problems, with folic acid deficiency being linked to neurocognitive dysfunctions. There is controversy surrounding the efficacy of vitamin supplementation in these pathologies, but research supports potential benefits for Alzheimer's Disease and cognitive impairment, though further studies are needed for confirmation.

Marina Redruello-Requejo, Maria Gonzalez-Rodriguez, Ma de Lourdes Samaniego-Vaesken, Ana Montero-Bravo, Teresa Partearroyo, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras

Summary: The presence and consumption of LNCS in foods and beverages consumed by a representative sample of the Spanish adult population were identified in this study. LNCS were found in 4.5% of foods and 22.3% of beverages, with the highest consumption in non-alcoholic beverages, sugars and sweets, and dairy products. A variety of LNCS were consumed, with differences in prevalence among various food and beverage categories.

Iron Supplementation at the Crossroads of Nutrition and Gut Microbiota: The State of the Art

Ana M. Puga, Maria de Lourdes Samaniego-Vaesken, Ana Montero-Bravo, Mar Ruperto, Teresa Partearroyo, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras

Summary: Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in human health, and both diet and iron supplementation have an impact on it. Iron supplementation can potentially harm the gut microbiota, therefore it should be used with caution and recommended only to individuals with confirmed iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia. Further population studies are needed to confirm these findings.
