Summary: This study suggests that in elderly patients in China, the use of edoxaban is associated with lower risks of new onset hip fractures, medically attended falls, and mortality compared to warfarin.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between oral anticoagulation (OAC) use and thromboembolic events and major bleeding in patients with new postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after noncardiac surgery. The results showed that OAC was not associated with a reduction in long-term thromboembolic events in these patients, but it did increase the risk for major bleeding. Future prospective clinical studies are needed to better understand the efficacy and safety of anticoagulation therapy in the setting of POAF after noncardiac surgery.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the hematoma risk after core-needle breast biopsy in patients receiving antithrombotic medication and to stratify the risk by antithrombotic type. The results showed that clinically significant hematomas were uncommon, suggesting that withholding antithrombotic medications before biopsy may be unnecessary.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the perioperative management and long-term prognosis of elderly patients undergoing urgent hip surgery while receiving antithrombotic treatment. The study found that anticoagulants may delay surgery, but a delay of more than 48 hours does not have a significant impact on prognosis. Patients receiving warfarin had a lower one-year survival rate, potentially due to their higher risk profile at the time of trauma.

Summary: The study demonstrated that NOACs are associated with a lower risk of fractures compared to warfarin after more than 2 years of anticoagulation. Rivaroxaban users have a lower risk of fractures in AF patients compared to warfarin users, but there is no evidence that apixaban, edoxaban, and dabigatran can reduce the risk of all fractures and hip fractures.

Summary: Compared with warfarin, NOACs are associated with lower risks of bone fracture, particularly in hip fractures. Dabigatran, rivaroxaban, and apixaban were found to be significantly associated with lower fracture risks. The findings from randomized controlled trials and real-world cohort studies were consistent, supporting the conclusion of the study.

Summary: The aging processes affect the body's response to medications and elderly patients are underrepresented in clinical trials. Evidence-based prescribing guidelines may result in inappropriate prescriptions, increasing the risk of drug interactions and adverse reactions. Clear information and proper consideration of older patients are necessary.

Summary: Recent fragility fractures are better captured with a 10-year fracture probability than 2- or 5-year probabilities. The study found that the recency of fractures affects subsequent fracture risk, with 10-year probability providing more accurate analysis.

Summary: Analysis of long-term medical record data on COPD patients and matched controls revealed that patients with COPD have a higher risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis, with high-dose ICS use further increasing this risk.

Summary: Among patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation, treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) was associated with a reduced incidence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment, with a 16% reduction in dementia diagnosis and a 26% reduction in incident MCI compared to treatment with Vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

Summary: This study found that warfarin has a negative effect on blood transfusion and postoperative complications in low-energy hip fracture patients. Patients on warfarin require more blood transfusions and have a higher incidence of postoperative complications compared to non-anticoagulated patients.

Summary: The study revealed that most patients use herbal medications in addition to prescription drugs, believing that herbs can control their conditions, yet they do not believe in simultaneous use of both. The majority of patients do not disclose their herbal medicine use to healthcare providers. In the focus group discussions, patients highly valued the effectiveness of herbal medicines, and highlighted the role of family elders and religiosity in herbal use.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, it was found that there was no significant correlation between fracture risk and metformin application in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Further research is needed to make a definite conclusion due to the limited number of existing studies, providing clinical consensus with more evidence.

Summary: This study found no clear association between the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and reducing cancer risk, compared to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), in a large cohort of atrial fibrillation patients. The results did not show a chemoprotective effect of VKA over a follow-up period of up to 5 years.
