Summary: This narrative review discusses the effects of front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) on purchasing behavior, dietary patterns, and food reformulation. Non-directive FOPLs are well-accepted but require cognitive effort. Directive FOPLs are supported in studies and help consumers rank food products based on their healthiness.

Summary: Improving nutrient density in processed foods is key to meeting WHO Sustainable Development Goals. PepsiCo's Nutrition Criteria (PNC) is an internal nutrient profiling model designed to guide and monitor improvements in food and beverage quality. By using this model, product changes have been made to align with WHO transparency goals.

Summary: Excessive intake of energy, sugars, salt, and saturated fats is a significant causal factor of obesity and related non-communicable diseases. Various European countries have developed proposals for front-of-pack food labeling to assist consumers in making healthy food choices. The intention is to achieve a harmonized front-of-pack label proposal by Q4 2022, with the Nutri-Score and NutrInform Battery being the two main proposals receiving attention.

Summary: The 2022 Front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) aim to communicate the health value of food items to consumers and support public health policies. However, directive FOPLs like Nutri-Score have drawbacks such as overemphasizing selected nutritional factors, ignoring the food matrix and holistic aspects of nourishment, and allowing ultra-processed products. In contrast, informative FOPLs focus on individual portions and avoid classifying foods as healthy or unhealthy. The adoption of FOPLs has not been effectively linked to improvements in health outcomes.

Summary: This study provides an overview of commercialized food and beverages made from algae and derived ingredients in the global, European, and Spanish markets from 2015 to 2019. The findings highlight similar product categories, dominant categories, and algal ingredients across different markets. It also emphasizes the importance of reading nutritional labeling for selecting products that meet consumer needs, and the need for comprehensive labeling legislation to provide complete product information.

Summary: One common strategy governments use to combat non-communicable diseases is front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) considering implementing either France's Nutri-Score or the Chilean warning label approach. A study using an online grocery store found that both modified Nutri-Score labels and Chilean warning labels influenced food choices positively for KSA participants, but with differential effects. The Nutri-Score improved overall diet quality, particularly in reducing sugar intake, while the warning label approach was effective in decreasing energy and saturated fat intake.

Summary: This study analyzed interactions between stakeholders and the Canadian government regarding front-of-package labelling policy proposals. The results showed that industry stakeholders tried to control the agenda and resist regulation, questioned the evidence supporting the policy, and dismissed the need for the policy. The study highlights the importance of careful consideration and balanced engagement with industry stakeholders in policy consultation and development.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of five front-of-pack food labels in guiding consumers towards healthier choices. The Nutri-Score and Multiple Traffic Lights performed best in terms of improving consumers' understanding and simulated choice outcomes, while the Reference Intakes performed the weakest. The results indicate that front-of-pack labels that effectively guide consumers towards healthier options can also help steer them away from unhealthy choices.

Summary: This study analyzes the nutritional quality of plant-based foods in the Spanish market and compares them with animal-based foods. Plant-based foods generally have higher fiber and carbohydrate content, but lower protein and saturated fat content compared to animal-based foods. However, there are also drawbacks in plant-based foods that could impact nutritional health.

Summary: The use of front-of-pack labeling (FOPL) is advocated to improve consumer knowledge of food nutrition and drive product reformulation in the food industry. However, the effectiveness of different FOPL systems in conveying useful information for improving food choices and dietary habits is still debated. This study compared three FOPL schemes in the EU and identified critical issues that need to be addressed.
