Summary: Africa, despite its lower greenhouse gas emissions, is heavily impacted by global warming. This study examines the impact of human capital and trade openness on the ecological footprint and CO2 emissions in West Africa. The findings show that human capital and trade openness decrease the ecological footprint, while globalization reduces CO2 emissions but increases the ecological footprint. The analysis also reveals the importance of natural resources and population in improving environmental quality, as well as the role of biocapacity in reducing the ecological footprint and improving CO2 emissions. The study suggests adopting green growth policies and improving technology to promote sustainable development in West Africa.

Summary: The migrant population in Japan is increasing, and this study aimed to investigate the changes in diet and physical activity post-migration and understand the factors contributing to these changes. A mixed-method approach was used, including a survey and interviews. The findings revealed an increased consumption of Japanese culture-related and convenience foods, as well as a decreased consumption of fruits. Various factors, including environmental, individual, and socio-cultural, were identified as influencing diet changes, and climate, lifestyle, and the influence of Japanese culture were determinants of physical activity changes.

Summary: In this study, dietary patterns were identified in Portuguese children and adolescents, including Unhealthy, Traditional, and Dairy patterns. The Unhealthy pattern was associated with older ages, lower intake of dietary fiber and vitamins, and the highest consumption of free sugars and ultra-processed foods. These findings provide important insights for food-based interventions and school-feeding policies in Portugal.

Summary: This study examines the characteristics of dietary patterns with lower intakes of animal-based protein foods and higher intakes of plant-based protein foods among French Canadian adults. The results suggest that reducing animal protein intake can improve diet quality and lower costs, while increasing plant protein intake can further enhance diet quality without additional costs.

Summary: Chinese immigrants in Western countries tend to change their eating patterns and behaviors depending on the length of their stay, which is known as dietary acculturation. This study aimed to characterize the dietary acculturation of the Chinese immigrant community in Portugal and identify the trend of this acculturation. The study found that participants with higher acculturation scores had higher energy and fat intake, and the timing spent in Portugal was associated with the likelihood of mixing Chinese and Portuguese meals. Efforts should be made to encourage Chinese immigrants to have a positive dietary transition during their acculturation process.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the most common dietary patterns per female household member and explore the diet quality and environmental impacts of these patterns. Three distinct dietary patterns were identified: Omnivorous, Traditional, and Pescatarian. While diet quality was slightly better in all three patterns, environmental impact was also higher. Further research is needed to develop a more optimal diet that considers both diet quality and environmental impact.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of explicit convection on climate change in the central West African Sahel using a pan-African convection-permitting simulation. The results show that explicit convection has multiple-scale effects on West African monsoon processes compared to parameterized convection. Under climate change, explicit convection leads to a shift in the West African monsoon and a weakening of the Hadley circulation. The findings highlight the limitations of parameterized convection and demonstrate the value of explicit convection simulations for climate modeling and policy-making.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between changes in polyphenol intake and T2D-related parameters in a senior population with T2D or at high risk of developing T2D. The results suggest that increasing polyphenol intake is inversely associated with better glucose levels and HbA1c after one year of follow-up, with associations modified by diabetes status.
