We present herein a characterization of a standard method used at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) to produce hydrophobic silica aerogels and expand this method to obtain a wide range of refractive index (n=1.006-1.14). We describe in detail the entire production process and explain the methods used to measure the characteristic parameters of aerogels, namely the refractive index, transmittance, and density. We use a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique to relate the transparency to the fine structure of aerogels. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: No significant signals of a light Higgs boson (A(0)) decaying into tau(+)tau(-) or mu(+)mu(-) pairs were observed in the radiative decays of Upsilon(1S). Upper limits on branching fractions were set, with an improvement on previous limits for Upsilon(1S) -> gamma A(0) (tau(+)tau(-)), and similar levels for A(0) -> mu(+) mu(-). Additionally, upper limits on Yukawa coupling and mixing angle were provided.

Summary: We present the first measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Lambda(+)(c) -> p eta' with eta' -> eta pi(+)pi(-). A significant signal for Lambda(+)(c) -> p eta' is observed for the first time, with a signal significance of 5.4 sigma. The relative branching fraction with respect to the normalization mode Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-) pi(+) is measured to be (7.54 +/- 1.32 +/- 0.73) x 10(-3).

The search was conducted using a complete data sample, but no statistically significant signals were observed. Upper limits were obtained for various branching fractions.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a search for the Z' gauge boson at the KEKB collider using a data sample collected by the Belle experiment. The Z' only couples to heavy leptons and their corresponding neutrinos. Unlike previous studies, we included the effects of initial state radiation in our signal simulation samples and did not observe any signal within the Z' mass range.

Summary: We report the first observation of the Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)mu(+)nu(mu) decay and measure the branching fraction ratios of the Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)l(+)nu(l) decays in comparison with the reference mode Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)pi(+), (l = e or mu). Using data samples collected at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider, we extract the Omega(0)(c) signal yields and measure the branching fraction ratios to be 1.98 +/- 0.13(stat) +/- 0.08(syst) and 1.94 +/- 0.18(stat) +/- 0.10(syst) for Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)e(+)nu(e) and Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)mu(+)nu(mu), respectively. The ratio of B(Omega(0)(c) -> Omega(-)e(+)nu(e))/B(Omega c0 -> Omega(-)mu(+)nu(mu)) is measured to be 1.02 +/- 0.10(stat) +/- 0.02(syst), which is consistent with lepton flavor universality.

Summary: In this study, the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for the decays B-0 -> (D) over bar (0)pi(0) and B+ -> (D) over bar (0)pi(+) are measured using the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. The results show that the measurements of B are the most precise to date and are in agreement with previous results, indicating the validity of the Standard Model expectations.

Summary: This study reports the first direct measurement of the inclusive branching fraction B(B-s -> DsX) via B-s tagging. The tagging is accomplished through a partial reconstruction of semileptonic decays B-s -> D(s)Xl nu. With the analysis of 121.4 fb⁻¹ data collected at the gamma(5S) resonance, the obtained value for B(B-s -> DsX) is (60.2 +/- 5.8 +/- 2.3)%, with the first uncertainty being statistical and the second being systematic.

R. Cardarelli, A. Rocchi, G. Aielli, P. Camarri, A. Di Ciaccio, L. Di Stante, B. Liberti, E. Pastori, L. Pizzimento, G. Proto

Summary: The Resistive Cylindrical Chamber (RCC) is a new generation of gaseous particle detectors that overcome the limitations of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) and expand their application range. By transitioning from planar to cylindrical geometry, while maintaining an almost planar electric field, the RCC achieves improved detection efficiency, increased gas pressure, and the possibility of using eco-friendly gases.

Giacomo Volpe

Summary: The ALICE collaboration is proposing a new apparatus, ALICE 3, to investigate the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties. In this context, conceptual studies for the development of a RICH detector for ALICE 3 are ongoing. The proposed baseline layout is a proximity-focusing RICH, using aerogel as Cherenkov radiator and Silicon Photomultipliers for photon detection. The detector specifications and performance obtained by Monte Carlo simulation are presented, along with the R&D challenges related to the design.

Sub-millimeter resolution SiPM-based neutron anger camera

M. Loyd, A. Khaplanov, V. Sedov, J. Beal, T. Visscher, C. Donahue, C. Montcalm, G. Warren, R. Butz, C. Boone, C. Hart, R. Riedel, Y. Diawara

Summary: Thermal and cold neutron beamlines require detector systems with high efficiency, large active area, and good spatial resolution. This study presents a new design of Anger camera using silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) instead of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), offering better resolution, less distortion, and more compactness. The use of SiPMs also enables the camera to be used in strong magnetic fields, providing additional experimental capabilities.

Vertical time-of-flight spectroscopy of ultracold neutrons

Thomas Neulinger, Hanno Filter, Oliver Zimmer

Summary: This paper describes the mathematical foundation for analyzing vertical time-of-flight (TOF) measurements using ultracold neutrons (UCN). It enables the spectroscopy of UCN with kinetic energies below the neutron optical potential of the detector entrance window. The paper provides general treatment methods and transformation rules for converting vertical TOF spectra into other spectra of interest.

Reduction of light output of plastic scintillator tiles during irradiation at cold temperatures and in low-oxygen environments

B. Kronheim, A. Belloni, T. K. Edberg, S. C. Eno, C. Howe, C. Palmer, C. Papageorgakis, M. Paranjpe, S. Sriram

Summary: This paper presents measurements of the relative decrease of light output during irradiation of small plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers. The study found substantial temporary damage during low-temperature irradiation, regardless of oxygen concentration and wrapping material. The wrapping material had an impact on the relative light loss, with the 3M(TM) Enhanced Specular Reflector Film showing the largest loss. The light loss was less at warmer temperatures and similar to that in standard atmosphere with 3% oxygen concentration. Evidence of a plateau in the radical density was seen for the data at 0 degrees C.
