Gamma-rays provide a powerful insight into the non-thermal universe and perhaps a unique probe for new physics beyond the standard model. Current experiments are already giving results in the physics of acceleration of cosmic rays in supernova remnants, pulsar and active galactic nuclei with a 100 sources detected at very-high-energies so far. Despite its relatively recent appearance, very high-energy gamma-ray astronomy has proven to have reached a mature technology with fast assembling, relatively cheap and reliable telescopes. The goal of future installation is to increase the sensitivity by a factor 10 compared to current installations, and enlarge the energy domain from few 10s of GeV to a 100 TeV. Gamma-ray spectra of astrophysical origin are rather soft thus hardly one single size telescope can cover more than 1.5 decades in energy, therefore an array of telescopes of 2-3 different sizes is required. Hereafter, we present design considerations for a Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), a project for a new generation of highly automated telescopes for gamma-ray astronomy. The status of the project, technical solutions and an insight in the involved physics will be presented. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: We report multiwavelength observations of the gravitationally lensed blazar QSO B0218+357 from 2016 to 2020, which include the detection of optical, X-ray, and GeV flares. The lack of significant very high energy gamma-ray emission suggests a multizone nature for the emission from this object. The study provides constraints on the duty cycle and flux of the VHE gamma-ray emission and also offers insights into the properties of the lensing galaxy and the spatial structure of the radio components.

Summary: We report a long-lasting elevated gamma-ray flux state from VER J0521+211 observed by VERITAS, MAGIC, and Fermi-LAT in 2013 and 2014. The peak integral flux above 200 GeV measured with nightly binned light curve is (8.8 +/- 0.4) x 10(-7) photons m(-2) s(-1), which is approximately 37% of the Crab Nebula flux. X-ray, UV, and optical instruments also observed this phenomenon. A moderate correlation was observed between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes, and the X-ray spectrum became harder when the flux increased. Through the gamma-ray spectrum and four models of the extragalactic background light (EBL), a conservative 95% confidence upper limit on the redshift of the source was found to be z <= 0.31. Unlike the gamma-ray and X-ray bands, the optical flux did not significantly increase during the study period compared to the archival low-state flux. The spectral variability from the optical to X-ray bands suggests that the synchrotron peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED) may become broader during flaring states, which can be adequately described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model varying the high-energy end of the underlying particle spectrum. The synchrotron peak frequency of the SED and the radio morphology of the jet from the MOJAVE program are consistent with the source being an intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lac object.

Summary: This study investigates the gamma-ray emission in the vicinity of the gamma Cygni supernova remnant (SNR) and identifies three emission regions associated with the SNR. The researchers find that the maximum energy of cosmic rays (CRs) and the level of turbulence in the shock depend on the SNR's lifetime. These findings have important implications for understanding the mechanism of CR acceleration in SNRs.

Summary: This study presents the multiwavelength observations of MAXI J1820+070, a low-mass X-ray binary, and finds evidence of a non-thermal particle population. The results also provide constraints on the source properties, particularly in relation to the high-energy gamma-ray emitting region and its distance from the black hole.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the long-term multi-band flux variability of 1ES 0647+250 and constrain the physical parameters of the blazar emission region. Significant long-term variability was found in X-rays and VHE gamma rays. The redshift estimation yielded a value of z=0.45 +/- 0.05, compatible with some values reported in the literature. The SEDs of different activity states can be reasonably described by one-component and two-component leptonic scenarios.

Summary: By observing the SNR G106.3+2.7 with the MAGIC telescopes, we detected extended gamma-ray emission that is spatially coincident with the radio continuum morphology. The multi-wavelength spectrum of the emission from the tail region suggests proton acceleration up to similar to PeV, while the emission mechanism of the head region could either be hadronic or leptonic. The high-energy emission in this middle-aged supernova remnant can be explained by considering a scenario where protons escaping from the SNR in the past interact with surrounding dense gases at present.

Summary: Several new ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray sources have been discovered by the LHAASO collaboration. The nature of one of these sources, LHAASO J2108 +5157, which has no very high-energy counterpart, is investigated using X-ray and TeV observations. The observations suggest that the emission can be explained by inverse Compton scattering or hadronic emission, but the origin of the emission remains uncertain.

Summary: We studied the broadband emission of Mrk 501 using multiwavelength observations from 2017 to 2020 and found an extremely low broadband activity, which helps to unravel its baseline emission. Significant flux variations were detected at all wave bands, with the highest variations occurring at X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) γ-rays. Correlations between X-rays and VHE γ-rays were measured, supporting leptonic scenarios to explain the variable parts of the emission. We also identified significant correlations between Swift X-Ray Telescope and Fermi-LAT, and correlations between high-energy γ-rays and radio with a lag of more than 100 days.

Summary: A deep survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at & SIM;0.1-100 TeV photon energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array is planned, and the detection prospects and constraints on the nature of dark matter are assessed. The survey will allow for fine spectral studies of known TeV emitters and the detection of additional sources, mainly pulsar-powered objects. The remnants from SN 1987A could be detected depending on the cosmic-ray spectrum and flux increase.

Summary: Linelike features in TeV gamma rays are searched for in the Galactic Center region using ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. No linelike spectral feature is found in the analysis. The cross section for dark matter annihilation into two photons is constrained to be less than or similar to 5 x 10-28 cm3 s-1 at 1 TeV and less than or similar to 1 x 10-25 cm3 s-1 at 100 TeV, providing the best constraints to date for dark matter with mass above 20 TeV and a cuspy dark matter profile at the Galactic Center. Constraints on supersymmetric wino models are also obtained using the derived limits for both cuspy and cored dark matter profiles.

Summary: This study assesses the potential of using very high energy gamma-ray spectral signatures to identify PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The simulations show that after scanning the Galactic plane for 10 hours, CTA is expected to detect a gamma-ray signal from an average of 9 PeVatron SNRs. Deep observations with CTA, lasting O(100) hours per source, also have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons.

Reduction of light output of plastic scintillator tiles during irradiation at cold temperatures and in low-oxygen environments

B. Kronheim, A. Belloni, T. K. Edberg, S. C. Eno, C. Howe, C. Palmer, C. Papageorgakis, M. Paranjpe, S. Sriram

Summary: This paper presents measurements of the relative decrease of light output during irradiation of small plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers. The study found substantial temporary damage during low-temperature irradiation, regardless of oxygen concentration and wrapping material. The wrapping material had an impact on the relative light loss, with the 3M(TM) Enhanced Specular Reflector Film showing the largest loss. The light loss was less at warmer temperatures and similar to that in standard atmosphere with 3% oxygen concentration. Evidence of a plateau in the radical density was seen for the data at 0 degrees C.
