Summary: Generally, active packaging with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties can improve the quality of ordinary packaging and extend the shelf life of food. In this study, an active edible film was prepared by incorporating anise essential oil (AEO) into a gelatin-gelatin-alginate film. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity of the film increased with the increase in AEO concentration, while the film's tensile strength and moisture content decreased. The films exhibited good antimicrobial activity and were suitable for food storage.

Summary: In the past decade, researchers have developed gel-based formulations as alternatives to traditional hydrogels and emulgels. Anise, the main constituent of Pimpinella anisum L., was selected as the active ingredient due to its strong antibacterial properties. This study aimed to develop an herbal emulgel for treating skin infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Tests and evaluations were conducted on an emulgel solution containing anise essential oil, which showed good stability and potential as an antibacterial formulation against Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model organism.

Summary: The present study optimized the effective parameters in ohmic-assisted hydrodistillation (OH) technique with ultrasound pre-(US-OH) and microwave (MW-OH) treatment to achieve maximum extraction yield, minimum energy consumption, and maximum total phenol content of essential oil. The results indicated that both ultrasound and microwave pre-treatment time, extraction time, and voltage gradient significantly affected the extraction yield, energy consumption, and total phenol content. The optimal process for US-OH and MW-OH methods were determined based on voltage gradient, process time, and pre-treatment time. A comparison with hydrodistillation method showed higher extraction efficiencies and better quality of essential oil produced using US-OH and MW-OH methods.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water deficit stress on the seed yield, physiological functions, fatty acid content, essential oil composition, phenolic acid and flavonoid amounts, and antioxidant activities of anise seeds. The results showed that severe water deficit stress significantly reduced seed yield and various seed components. Water deficit stress also affected the chlorophyll content, photosystem II efficiency, and cell membrane stability, while increasing leaf temperature. The composition of fatty acids and essential oil in the seeds also changed under water deficit stress. Higher levels of phenolic compounds and increased antioxidant activity were observed in stressed seeds.

Summary: This study investigated the use of gelatin-alginate (G-AL) coating with varying concentrations of anise essential oil (AEO) to extend the shelf life of zucchini fruit during room storage and cold storage. The results showed that the coating significantly slowed down the quality changes of the fruit, especially when high concentrations of AEO were used. The first-order kinetic model demonstrated the best performance in predicting the quality parameters. The findings suggest that G-AL coating containing AEO can be used as an effective edible coating for zucchini fruit storage.

Summary: For industries using aniseed, essential oil content and aroma composition are crucial. Anise fruits from 15 locations were analyzed for these factors using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The locations were categorized into five classes based on the essential oil components. Trans-anethole was identified as the main component, with varying rates among populations (90.8-96.6%). The location significantly influenced essential oil, fruit width, fruit length, and thousand fruit weight, showing a positive correlation.

Summary: Water deficit significantly affects the yield of anise plants, but there is a lack of effective selection criteria for developing drought-tolerant genotypes. This study investigated the relationship between seed yield and related traits in anise and evaluated the interaction between genotype and trait, as well as genotype and water treatment. The results showed that seed number, thousand seed weight, net photosynthesis, and stomatal conductance were important traits for developing drought-tolerant anise genotypes.

Summary: The study found that active PLA films containing different percentages of anise essential oil (AE) exhibited improved thermal stability and minimized water vapor permeability compared to neat PLA films. The addition of AE also led to changes in lightness and yellowness of the composites, as well as alterations in mechanical properties. Furthermore, the antibacterial analysis showed that the PLA/AE films had varying inhibitory effects on bacteria such as L. monocytogenes and V. parahaemolyticus, demonstrating the potential of AE as an antibacterial agent in active food packaging.
