Density and shelter influence the adaptation of wild juvenile cauque prawns Macrobrachium americanum to culture conditions

Consumer demand for aquatic animals has led to increased interest in using new species for aquaculture purposes. This study appraises the potential for aquaculture of the cauque prawn Macrobrachium americanum using wild juveniles from the west coast of Mexico. Four treatments were applied; treatments A and B consisted of 196 prawns/m(2) and treatments C and D of 98 prawns/m(2), with and without shelter, respectively. Growth and survival under these conditions were examined for 84 d. The combination of 98 prawns/m(2) and shelter resulted in the best survival and growth, whereas the poorest performance was in the treatment with 196 prawns/m(2) and no shelter.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of white shrimp farming using groundwater from the coastal aquifer in Guasave, Sinaloa. By conducting twenty-three vertical electrical soundings (VES) and analyzing ion content, a relationship between resistivity of the saturated formation (Ro) and resistivity of aquifer water (Rw) was established. The research found that, in most natural waters, the survival rate of shrimp larvae was higher than 60%, with only two sites showing improved survival in simulated seawater conditions. Building the Rw-Ro relation helped infer water quality and identify suitable drilling locations.

Summary: The impact of salinity on oxygen consumption rate and hemolymph osmotic pressure of Macrobrachium tenellum was studied in salinities ranging from 0 to 25 psu. The prawns showed hyper-regulatory behavior at lower salinities and hypo-regulatory behavior at higher salinities. The isosmotic point was identified at 16 psu, indicating the species' ability to successfully invade freshwater environments.

Summary: The morphological variations of Macrobrachium tenellum prawns from two populations in different locations in Oaxaca, Mexico were studied using geometric morphometry techniques. Significant differences in shape and size between the cephalothorax and the rostrum were found. There were significant interpopulation variations between specimens from different places, with a higher correlation between shape and size observed only in males. The differences between populations and sexes could be attributed to environmental pressures and a sexual selection mechanism.
