Summary: This study investigated the predictive value of defensive functioning and defense mechanisms in determining the effectiveness of brief psychodynamic psychotherapy for recurrent and chronic depression in an inpatient setting. The results showed that changes in defensive functioning along with mature and immature defense mechanisms during therapy were predictive of treatment response, with the addition of psychotic defenses enhancing the prediction of treatment outcomes. The findings support the role of defensive functioning as a predictor of treatment outcomes and a mechanism of change in psychotherapy.

Summary: This study is the first randomized controlled trial of manualized psychodynamic intervention for children with ODD, showing significant reductions in ODD symptoms after 10 weeks of treatment. While parent-reported improvements in ODD symptoms were significant at the end of treatment, there were no observed changes in explicit emotion regulation. 79.4% of children were recovered or improved after 10 weeks of treatment.

Summary: The study found that while all treatments showed similar effects post-treatment, they differed in the speed of improvement and pattern of deteriorations. Focused attention (FA) had the fastest rate of improvement but lost treatment-related gains in the long-term. Open monitoring (OM) had the slowest rate of improvement and lost improvements in anxiety long-term, resulting in higher anxiety levels at week 20 compared to MBCT and FA.

Summary: This study compared internet-based psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) with established evidence-based treatment (internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy [ICBT]) for adolescents with depression. The findings showed that IPDT is as effective as ICBT in reducing depression severity among adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study provides additional accessible and effective treatment options for adolescents with depression.

Summary: In recent years, manualized psychodynamic approaches have been developed to target specific problems or disorders and are used for systematic outcome studies. One example, panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy, has shown efficacy in treating panic disorder. These manuals are designed to be easily understood for training purposes and can be more readily applied in the public health sector. Extensive research is needed to determine the most effective psychotherapies for different patients and conditions.

Summary: This study examined the experiences of psychodynamic psychotherapists with the transition and delivery of videoconferencing psychotherapy (VCP) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey data from 479 licensed psychotherapists were analyzed, and the results highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of VCP in terms of accessibility, online video setting, therapeutic relationship, and therapeutic process. The study also discussed the statements regarding transference and countertransference reactions among different patient groups. The findings emphasize the importance of identifying patients who may benefit from VCP.

Summary: This study combines hope theory with solution-focused brief therapy to develop a nurse-led psychological pain solution-focused intervention for depressed patients. A total of 84 depressed patients will be recruited and randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The primary outcomes are psychological pain, hope, and cognitive distortions. This study will advance the development of psychological pain interventions for patients with depression.

Summary: Through narrative synthesis, it is found that psychodynamic therapy is effective in treating a wide range of mental health difficulties in children and adolescents, especially for internalizing disorders, emerging personality disorders and children who have experienced adversity. The quality and quantity of research in this field has increased over time, but methodological limitations still exist. More high-quality research is needed to better understand the effectiveness of psychodynamic therapy for children and young people.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between psychotherapy outcomes and interaction patterns during therapy is crucial. This study compared and analyzed the interaction patterns between a therapist and two depressed girls, with one showing good outcomes and the other poor outcomes. The findings revealed differences in relational patterns and therapeutic approaches, which were associated with the patients' mentalization, psychological mindedness, and attachment styles.

Summary: The study found that telephone and videoconferencing are considered valuable treatment formats for providing psychodynamic psychotherapy, but therapists' experiences with remote psychotherapy are multifaceted and ambiguous. Questions regarding the maintenance of the therapeutic alliance, the development of the analytic process, the sensitivity to unconscious communication, and the indication for certain types of patients in remote sessions still need further investigation.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between socio-economic status and alcohol-related mortality, as well as the joint effects of alcohol, smoking, and body mass index. The findings suggest that individuals with lower socio-economic status may be more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol and smoking on alcohol-related mortality.

Summary: The study found that high education is related to smoking cessation in the general adult population, especially among men. It also showed that higher plasma cotinine levels are strongly associated with continued smoking. Background variables have only a modest effect on the association between education and smoking cessation.

Summary: Circulating cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) levels are associated with age, sex, smoking, physical activity, vegetable consumption, ageing phenotypes, and various biomarkers. Higher cf-DNA levels were found in men, especially middle-aged men and women who smoke, and older frail individuals. Inflammatory markers, metabolites, and antioxidant levels were correlated with cf-DNA levels. These findings have implications for future studies on the epidemiology and biological mechanisms of cf-DNA and its potential as a clinical marker.

Summary: Conflicting evidence exists regarding the relationship between sarcopenic obesity and mortality risk. This study examined the associations between obesity, probable sarcopenia, and all-cause mortality in individuals aged 70 years and over. The results showed that probable sarcopenia, with or without obesity, was associated with increased mortality, while obesity alone did not increase mortality risk. Maintaining muscle strength and identifying individuals at risk of sarcopenia are important for preventing premature death.
