The first large-scale survey of sexual and asexual Trichoderma morphs collected from plant and fungal materials conducted in Southern Europe and Macaronesia including a few collections from French islands east of Africa yielded more than 650 specimens identified to the species level. Routine sequencing of tef1 revealed a genetic variation among these isolates that exceeds previous experience and ca. 90 species were recognized, of which 74 are named and 17 species newly described. Aphysiostroma stercorarium is combined in Trichoderma. For the first time a sexual morph is described for T. hamatum. The hitherto most complete phylogenetic tree is presented for the entire genus Trichoderma, based on rpb2 sequences. For the first time also a genus-wide phylogenetic tree based on acl1 sequences is shown. Detailed phylogenetic analyses using tef1 sequences are presented in four separate trees representing major clades of Trichoderma. Discussions involve species composition of clades and ecological and biogeographic considerations including distribution of species.

Neopestalotiopsis siciliana sp. nov. and N. rosae Causing Stem Lesion and Dieback on Avocado Plants in Italy

Alberto Fiorenza, Giorgio Gusella, Dalia Aiello, Giancarlo Polizzi, Hermann Voglmayr

Summary: This study presents the first report of Neopestalotiopsis species affecting avocado in Italy, including the description of a new species. The characterization of the isolates was based on morphological characters, mycelial growth rate, and gene sequencing. Pathogenicity tests confirmed the pathogenicity of both Neopestalotiopsis species on avocado.

Studies on the secondary metabolism of Rosellinia and Dematophora strains (Xylariaceae) from Iran

Mohammad Javad Pourmoghaddam, Guener Ekiz, Christopher Lambert, Frank Surup, Gian Primahana, Kathrin Wittstein, Seyed Akbar Khodaparast, Hermann Voglmayr, Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber, Theresia E. B. Stradal, Marc Stadler

Summary: The xylariaceous genus Dematophora has been separated from Rosellinia based on molecular phylogeny and morphological characters. This taxonomic change is significant as Dematophora contains important pathogens, while Rosellinia consists mainly of saprotrophic species with potential beneficial effects on host plants. New strains of rosellinoid Xylariaceae have been discovered in Iran and their mycelial cultures have been studied for secondary metabolites to establish chemotaxonomic affinities. Thirteen compounds have been isolated and identified, including three new compounds. Antimicrobial testing showed weak activity of cytochalasin E against Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Cytochalasin derivatives were also examined for cytotoxicity and their effects on actin cytoskeletal organization.

Alien and cryptogenic fungi and oomycetes in Austria: an annotated checklist (2nd edition)

Hermann Voglmayr, Anna Schertler, Franz Essl, Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber

Summary: Fungal invasions can have significant consequences, but there is a lack of research on fungi in invasion science. This annotated checklist provides a comprehensive overview of alien and cryptogenic fungi and oomycetes in Austria, showing a significant increase in their numbers. Most of the introduced fungi are plant pathogens, with a small number of animal pathogens severely affecting native hosts. The dominance of pathogens highlights the importance of better understanding and managing fungal invasions.

Note on the genus Nemania (Xylariaceae) - first records and a new species of the genus from Iran

Mohammad Javad Pourmoghaddam, Christopher Lambert, Hermann Voglmayr, Seyed Akbar Khodaparast, Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber, Marc Stadler

Summary: In a survey of xylarialean fungi in northern Iran, new species N. hyrcana was discovered, and the presence of N. diffusa and N. serpens in Iran was confirmed for the first time. Furthermore, a study of multi-gene sequences revealed misidentification of N. serpens accessions and the close relationship between Euepixylon species and N. serpens.

Christian Gegenbauer, Anke Bellaire, Arno Schintlmeister, Markus C. Schmid, Markus Kubicek, Hermann Voglmayr, Gerhard Zotz, Andreas Richter, Veronika E. Mayer

Summary: The epiphytic orchid Caularthron bilamellatum obtains nutrients from ant waste and forms a symbiotic relationship with black fungi and endophytic fungi, which help in the rapid translocation of nutrients from the waste to the plant's tissues.
