A new ligand based on permethylated beta-cyclodextrin bearing a methylimidazole group was synthesized. In the presence of this N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, silver or palladium complexes were generated. Interestingly, palladium species based on this ligand are more active than palladium species based on TPP or IMes, Cl for a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction.

Walid Hamza Saadaoui, Cecile Machut, Sebastien Rio, Sandra Bigot, Vincent Wiatz, Eric Monflier, Anne Ponchel

Summary: The direct conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was investigated using phosphated niobium oxide-carbon catalysts in a biphasic system. A facile approach for generating Nb-based composites with high metal loadings (around 20%) was developed through hydrothermal carbonization, calcination, and H3PO4 adsorption. Catalysts were characterized through various techniques, and NbP@C-RB30 and NbP@C-RB15 prepared using oligosaccharides and low water volumes exhibited higher efficiency for HMF production.

Efficient removal of fluoride ions present in industrial effluents using metal-organic frameworks of UiO-66-NH2

Dario Lacalamita, Guillaume Hoyez, Chiara Mongiovi, Anne Ponchel, Nadia Morin-Crini, Cyril Rousseau, Christophe Loup, Jolanta Rousseau, Marina Raschetti, Eric Monflier, Vincent Placet, Gregorio Crini

Summary: In recent years, there have been numerous studies on the use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to remove contaminants from aqueous solutions. However, little is known about using MOFs as adsorbents for the removal of fluoride ions from real effluents. In this study, a highly porous MOF, UiO-66-NH2, was used for the final treatment of complex discharge waters containing fluoride ions. The batch experiments showed that the MOF exhibited high adsorption capacities for fluoride ions, effectively reducing their concentrations in the effluent.

Summary: Aqueous hydroaminomethylation (HAM) is a Green process for the efficient production of amines from basic chemicals. In this study, a continuous process for HAM in an aqueous multiphase system was successfully established. By adding randomly methylated-beta-cyclodextrin as a mass transfer agent, high yields and selectivities were achieved in several continuous experiments. The addition of cyclodextrin made it unnecessary to use solvents.

Cedric Decarpigny, Anne Ponchel, Eric Monflier, Rudina Bleta

Summary: Surface modification is crucial for the production of highly efficient and stable enzymatic nanoreactors. This study investigates the impact of various functional groups on the catalytic performance of lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) in a supramolecular hydrogel. Results show that different functional groups have different effects on the catalytic activity and stability of CALB. Additionally, the use of cationic cross-linked beta-CD as an enzyme-stabilizing agent enhances the operational stability of the biocatalyst. These findings suggest that the supramolecular silicified hydrogel monoliths with hierarchical porosity have potential applications in biocatalytic continuous flow processes.

Synthesis of p-aminophenol by transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene with formic acid as a hydrogen source

Yisheng Zhang, Wensong Li, Jing Li, Fang Li, Wei Xue, Xinqiang Zhao, Yanji Wang

Summary: Pt/C and SO42-/ZrO2 were used as catalysts for the synthesis of p-aminophenol through the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene in water with formic acid as the hydrogen source. The optimal Pt loading for PAP selectivity was found to be 1 wt%. The presence of different valence states of Pt affected both the nitrobenzene hydrogenation and formic acid decomposition. Among different solid acid catalysts tested, SO42-/ZrO2 exhibited the highest catalytic activity for p-aminophenol formation. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of nitrobenzene reached 80.0%, with a selectivity of 47.6% for p-aminophenol.

A mechanistic study on coupling of CO2 and epoxide mediated by guanidine/TBAI catalysts

Yihua Fu, Yan Zhang, Changwei Hu, Zhishan Su

Summary: The mechanism of the reaction between CO2 and styrene oxide for cyclic carbonate was revealed using density functional theory calculations. The noncatalytic reaction occurred via a concerted mechanism, while in the presence of guanidine and tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) co-catalysts, the epoxide ring-opening by nucleophilic attack of an iodide anion was predicted to be the rate-determining step. Guanidine acted as the H-bond donor to activate styrene oxide, facilitating the reaction with a lower activation barrier.

Localized surface plasmon resonance assisted photoredox catalysis using newly fabricated copper-nanorods: a decarboxylative approach towards carbon-hydrogen bond formation under visible light

Saikat Khamarui, Sirshendu Ghosh

Summary: Copper nanorods (Cu-NRs) exhibit significant plasmonic behavior and can act as efficient catalysts in redox processes and coupling. A benign decarboxylative approach, utilizing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) assisted catalysis with Cu-NRs, has been developed for the production of alkane analogues from alkyl carboxylic acids under visible light. The catalyst shows a broad substrate scope and high functional group tolerance, without the need for an external oxidant or proton source. A plausible mechanism for this recyclable nano-catalyst has also been proposed based on control experiments.
