At least weekly, a 62-year-old kindergarten teacher has a strong sense of urgency to urinate that is followed by urinary leakage while she rushes to the bathroom during her lunch break. She also infrequently leaks drops of urine while exercising. Her medical history is notable for mild hypertension, for which she takes hydrochlorothiazide. On physical examination, she is found to be obese and not to have abdominal masses or clinically significant pelvic-organ prolapse. How should her case be evaluated and treated?
