Transcranial magnetic (TMS) and direct current (tDCS) stimulation are non-invasive brain stimulation techniques that allow researchers to purposefully modulate cortical excitability in focal areas of the brain. Recent work has provided preclinical evidence indicating that TMS and tDCS can facilitate motor performance, motor memory formation, and motor skill learning in healthy subjects and possibly in patients with brain lesions. Although the optimal stimulation parameters to accomplish these goals remain to be determined, and controlled multicentre clinical studies are lacking, these findings suggest that cortical stimulation techniques could become in the future adjuvant strategies in the rehabilitation of motor deficits. The aim of this article is to critically review these findings and to discuss future directions regarding the possibility of combining these techniques with other interventions in neurorehabilitation.

An iPPG-Based Device for Pervasive Monitoring of Multi-Dimensional Cardiovascular Hemodynamics

Jingjing Luo, Junjie Zhen, Peng Zhou, Wei Chen, Yuzhu Guo

Summary: This study developed a video-based facial iPPG detecting equipment that provides multi-dimensional spatiotemporal hemodynamic pulsations for high portability and self-monitoring needs. A series of algorithms were also created for physiological indices extraction and visualization of hemodynamic pulsation distribution. The new device offers a reliable measurement of cardiovascular hemodynamics and, combined with advanced computing techniques, presents a promising solution for user-friendly pervasive healthcare.

Changes in EEG Brain Connectivity Caused by Short-Term BCI Neurofeedback-Rehabilitation Training: A Case Study

Youhao Wang, Jingjing Luo, Yuzhu Guo, Qiang Du, Qiying Cheng, Hongbo Wang

Summary: The study demonstrated that for the neurofeedback group, ERP brain network parameters showed significant changes and trends, while for the non-feedback group, most network parameters did not change significantly. The short-term effects of MI-BCI training were not observed significantly in ERD analysis, but could be detected significantly by ERP-based network analysis.

tDCS-Induced Memory Reconsolidation Effects: Analysis of Prominent Predicting Factors

Maria Cotelli, Clarissa Ferrari, Elena Gobbi, Giuliano Binetti, Rosa Manenti, Marco Sandrini

Summary: Memory impairment is a common cognitive complaint in middle-aged and elderly adults. This study found that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left prefrontal cortex can enhance delayed memory retrieval in older adults with subjective memory complaints and mild cognitive impairment. Cognitive reserve and education level also affect memory retrieval.

FIORA : A Flexible Tendon-Driven Continuum Manipulator for Laparoscopic Surgery

Fuhao Wang, Hongbo Wang, Jingjing Luo, Xiaoyang Kang, Haoyang Yu, Hao Lu, Yu Dong, Xiaoxu Jia

Summary: This letter presents a flexible tendon-driven continuum surgical manipulator called FLORA, which aims to solve the problems of low flexibility, poor internal extension, and chopstick effect in most laparoscopic surgical robots. The manipulator is composed of three independent flexible segments in series, driven by twelve tendons, and has good flexibility and rigidity. It also features a compact actuation unit and a kinematic modeling method based on piecewise constant curvature model, which can accurately model and fast decouple the manipulator.

Summary: In this paper, a regression model using 3D convolution neural networks (CNN) for locating radial artery upon radius at the wrist using near-infrared picture sequences is proposed. Compared to previous 2D models, the 3D CNN model achieved superior performance accuracy and highlighted dynamic changes within image sequences.

Yunjie Li, Min Wei, Qiliang Chen, Xing Zhu, Hui Li, Hongbo Wang, Jingjing Luo

Summary: Camera-based image sequences can be used to measure blood pressure continuously and noncontactly using a deep-learning approach called Hybrid D1DCnet. The model can predict systolic and diastolic blood pressure by analyzing forehead imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) waveforms and personal information. The research demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of using this model to monitor circulatory health and contribute to the prevention and intervention of cardiovascular diseases.

Left Prefrontal tDCS during Learning Does Not Enhance Subsequent Verbal Episodic Memory in Young Adults: Results from Two Double-Blind and Sham-Controlled Experiments

Gergely Bartl, Paul Allen, Marco Sandrini

Summary: Recent studies suggest that tDCS applied over the PFaC may enhance episodic memory ability, but the magnitude of this effect is still inconclusive and the underlying brain mechanisms are yet to be tested. In a study involving young adults, tDCS over left PFC did not enhance memory performance as expected, indicating that the memory enhancement effects of tDCS may be smaller than initially thought. Possible reasons for the lack of enhancement effects are discussed.
