Abstract

In this issue of Neuron, work from Moughamian and Holzbaur (2012) and Lloyd et al. (2012) reveals a role for p150 in initiation of retrograde transport at synaptic terminals. These studies also suggest how mutations of p150's CAP-Gly domain lead to both Perry syndrome and HMN7B disease.

Summary: India's population, agriculture, environment, and social dynamics create conditions for zoonotic diseases, requiring a One Health approach for control. This study assesses the landscape of local One Health activities in India, emphasizing the need for intersectoral coordination and collaboration. The findings reveal limited formal coordination among veterinary, medical, and environmental professionals in the prevention and detection of zoonotic diseases at the local level, but highlight examples of successful intersectoral coordination.

Fragment characteristics from a cylindrical casing constrained at one end

Summary: This study analyzed the fragment characteristics and acceleration process of a partially constrained cylinder using X-ray radiography and numerical simulation. A new formula was proposed to predict the fragment velocity distribution of the constrained cylinder. The results showed that the fragment size and kinetic energy near the constrained end increased as the radial pressure gradient decreased, and the fragment velocity exceeded the maximum velocity calculated by the Gurney equation.

Summary: High-resolution biomarker and compound-specific isotope distributions, coupled with the degradation of calcareous fossil remnants, reveal that intensive euxinia and decalcification driven by Central Atlantic magmatic province activity formed a two-pronged kill mechanism at the end-Triassic mass extinction.

Intriguing one-dimensional electronic behavior in emerging two-dimensional materials

Summary: This paper reviews the recent progress of TLL electronic features in emerging 2D materials embedded with various 1D nanostructures, including island edges, domain walls, and 1D moire patterns. Novel physical phenomena, such as 1D edge states in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), helical TLL in 2D topological insulators (2DTI), and chiral TLL in 2D quantum Hall systems, are described and discussed at the nanoscale. Challenges and opportunities at the frontier of this research area are also analyzed.

Summary: This review examines the relationship between advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and neurocognitive and mental health disorders. Studies show that elevated circulating AGEs are associated with poorer cognitive function and increased risk of developing dementia, while higher skin AGE accumulation may be associated with mental disorders. The effects of AGEs are mediated by increased oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, and reducing dietary intake of AGEs may improve neurological and mental disorder outcomes.

Summary: In this study, a new technique was employed to reconstruct the decays of LLPs in the end cap muon detectors, allowing for sensitivity to a broad range of decay modes and masses as low as a few GeV. No excess of events above the SM background was observed, and stringent limits on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to LLPs subsequently decaying to quarks and tau(+)tau(-) were found for proper decay lengths greater than 6, 20, and 40 m for LLP masses of 7, 15, and 40 GeV, respectively.

Summary: Heterozygous truncating or splice-site SUFU variants cause a novel neurodevelopmental syndrome encompassing COMA and mild JS, likely representing overlapping entities. These variants can be de novo or inherited from a healthy parent, making it the first cause of JS with dominant inheritance and reduced penetrance. Awareness of this condition will increase the diagnostic yield of JS genetic testing and allow appropriate counseling about prognosis, medical monitoring, and recurrence risk.

This long-distance signaling process involves amplification mechanisms, feedback loops, and cross-talk among different signaling molecules, as well as a short-term memory system to refresh the propagation process.

All eggs in one basket: How potyvirus infection is controlled at a single cap-independent translation event

The potyviral RNA genome lacks a 5' cap but uses cis-acting elements to recruit the translation machinery for protein synthesis. Different translation mechanisms, such as scanning-dependent mechanism and internal initiation, are employed by the Potyviridae family, with the viral protein VPg playing a stimulatory role. These mechanisms have implications for potyviral pathogenicity and can inform strategies for crop resistance breeding and biotechnological protein production.

Two-in-One Spider Silk Protein with Combined Mechanical Features in All-Aqueous Spun Fibers

Summary: CLASPs are universal stabilizers of microtubule dynamics, and this study reveals that clusters of human CLASP2 form a load-bearing bond with terminal non-GTP tubulins at the stabilized microtubule tip. This activity relies on the TOG2 domain of CLASP2, which releases its high-affinity bond with non-GTP tubulins when they convert into polymerization-competent GTP-tubulins. The recognition of nucleotide-specific tubulin conformation by CLASP2 and its ability to stabilize non-GTP tubulins contribute to the suppression of catastrophe at freely assembling microtubule ends and the promotion of persistent tubulin assembly at load-bearing tethered ends.

Quiescence Generates Moving Average in a Stochastic Epidemiological Model with One Host and Two Parasites

Summary: Mathematical models are widely used to study the dynamics of coevolution and epidemiology, which can help improve disease management strategies. This study focuses on the influence of quiescence/dormancy on the dynamics of parasites and hosts. Deterministic and stochastic models are developed to analyze stability and stochasticity of the system, and it is found that quiescence can affect the variance of infected individuals and may dampen off stochasticity.
