Disease monitoring programs of rare genetic diseases: transparent data sharing between academic and commercial stakeholders

Hanns Lochmueller, Antonio Nino Ramirez, Emil Kakkis

Summary: The suggestion to form registries for rare neuromuscular diseases exclusively governed by physicians and patients aims to limit conflicts of interest, but poses logistical and financial challenges. An alternative proposed is the use of Disease Monitoring Programs (DMPs) for post-marketing follow-up, involving all stakeholders and ensuring consistent data collection and governance.

Congenital myasthenic syndrome in a cohort of patients with 'double' seronegative myasthenia gravis

Summary: This study confirmed that CMS caused by CHNRE mutations can be mistaken for SNMG, with an estimated misdiagnosis rate of 4.5% in 'double' SNMG patients in a Brazilian center. Genetic screening may be helpful in the diagnostic workup of 'double' SNMG patients.

Summary: Hereditary spinocerebellar degenerations (SCDs) are a group of monogenic conditions that include hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), cerebellar ataxia, and spinocerebellar ataxia. They often overlap with other neurological conditions and are caused by more than 200 genes and loci inherited through various modes of inheritance. Sudanese families with high consanguinity rates were studied, and a genetic diagnosis was reached in 63-73% of the families.
