Summary: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a syndrome caused by the reflux of gastric contents into the pharynx or larynx, leading to a variety of symptoms. Treatment options for LPR include medical therapies such as proton pump inhibitors and noninvasive treatment options like lifestyle therapy. Due to the complexity of patients with LPR, a treatment algorithm is proposed to assist clinicians in diagnosing and treating patients effectively.

Summary: Hearing impairment is a common sensory deficit affecting millions of people worldwide, and there is a lack of effective treatment. Collaboration with cochlear implant users and the development of new therapies offer potential solutions for improving hearing restoration. Gene therapy and major innovations in cochlear implants are likely to be clinically translated within this decade.

Summary: Indoor air quality in nursing homes often exceeds outdoor levels, which may adversely affect the health of elderly residents who are more susceptible to air pollutants. Regular monitoring and improvement of indoor air quality in nursing homes can reduce medical expenditures and improve residents' quality of life.

Summary: This article discusses the measures taken by the European Union to address unmet medical needs and evaluates the current approach. The paper points out that a rigid or restrictive legislative approach may hinder innovation and the development of valuable new treatments. It calls for reflection and suggests formulating legislation that allows for rapid adaptation to unexpected circumstances.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common malignant tumor with an increasing incidence in recent years. Immunotherapy, a hot topic in cancer therapy, has limited effectiveness on cold colorectal cancer. Researchers are focusing on developing immunotherapies to prevent colorectal cancer cells from escaping the immune system.

Summary: This study found high detection rates of GERD and LPRD at the digestive endoscopy center in Guangzhou, China. Older age, BMI >= 24.0 kg/m(2), smoking, and drinking history were identified as risk factors for both GERD and LPRD. Neither GerdQ nor RSI scores included common extraesophageal symptoms.

Summary: In recent years, the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux has increased, especially among pediatric patients. This study investigated the correlation between laryngeal and pharyngeal manifestations of laryngopharyngeal reflux, pepsin presence in saliva, and palatine tonsils in a pediatric population. Although no statistically significant differences were found, elevated index values consistently trended higher in the group with pepsin presence in tonsillar tissue.

Summary: This study presented atypical clinical presentations of LPR in patients seen at a clinic in Europe, showcasing how LPR can manifest in various ways involving the mouth, eyes, tracheobronchial tract, nasal passages, or larynx. These atypical findings were resolved with appropriate treatment, highlighting the importance of recognizing diverse symptoms of LPR for effective management.

Summary: This study measures the inequality and inequity in the distribution of clinical trials on cancer drug development between 1996 and 2016. The findings show disparities in clinical trial activity and research investment between rare and non-rare cancers, with differences across different stages of research and changes over time.

Summary: Monocytes and macrophages play a crucial role in the immune system, detecting and eradicating danger signals while maintaining tissue homeostasis. Imbalance in their response can lead to pathological disorders, and repolarization of these unbalanced macrophages shows promise as a therapeutic strategy.

Summary: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene, with no existing molecular markers available to quantify disease severity or predict clinical outcomes. Despite limitations in ALD biomarker studies, the growing number of biobanks and introduction of newborn screening provide unique opportunities for identifying and evaluating new biomarkers. The studies have generated a list of potential biomarker candidates, but further research is needed to address existing shortcomings and guide future biomarker research.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a lethal disease, and diagnosing it in young people is a significant challenge from both an individual and societal perspective. Early-onset gastric cancer accounts for around 5% of cases, with 3% being part of a hereditary syndrome and the majority being sporadic. However, the increasing number of early-onset cases in recent decades has generated increased interest and awareness in society and the scientific community. This article provides an updated overview of non-hereditary early-onset gastric cancer, which is currently an unmet clinical need, and explores future perspectives in this field.
