Summary: This study used machine learning to predict the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in sepsis survivors. The researchers found that estimated glomerular filtration rates, hemoglobin, and proteinuria were important predictors of ESRD development.

Summary: The study found that ESRD patients have a significantly lower number of T-cell subsets compared to CKD patients, which is related to a higher degree of apoptosis in these cells.

Summary: Vascular calcification is a risk factor for cardiovascular events and mortality in chronic kidney disease. Inflammation, particularly involving uremic toxin lanthionine, IL-8, and Eotaxin, plays a significant role in the occurrence and progression of vascular calcification in CKD patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of haemodialysis on doravirine concentrations in people living with HIV (PLWH) undergoing routine haemodialysis. The results showed that despite moderate removal of doravirine by haemodialysis, trough doravirine concentrations in plasma after the haemodialysis sessions remained in excess of the protein-binding-adjusted EC50 (5 ng/mL). Therefore, doravirine dosage adjustments are unnecessary in PLWH undergoing intermittent haemodialysis.

Summary: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) occurring in the setting of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) shows unique clinicopathological characteristics, with acquired cystic kidney disease-associated renal cell carcinoma (ACKD-RCC) and clear-cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (ccpRCC) being the most frequent types. Other types of RCC also occur in ESRD, albeit with different frequencies from the non-ESRD general population. While the histological features of RCC do not vary in the setting of ESRD vs. non-ESRD, other findings, such as multifocality and multiple tumor types, are more frequent in ESRD. Studies have generated novel and important knowledge of the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, immunophenotype, and molecular characteristics of ESRD-associated RCC.

Summary: This study identified three elevated plasma proteins associated with protection against progressive renal decline and progression to endstage renal disease in individuals with diabetes. These protective proteins may serve as biomarkers for stratifying diabetic individuals by their risk of developing ESRD, and could be explored as potential therapeutics to delay or prevent ESRD onset.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease and cardiac insufficiency often co-exist, especially in uremic patients on hemodialysis. Impaired renal function is often indicative of poor prognosis in patients with cardiac insufficiency. Inflammation plays a significant role in the development of cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease and is indicative of prognosis.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that patients with psoriasis are at higher risk of developing CKD and ESRD compared with the general population, but data on the differences in occurrence between psoriasis and non-psoriatic controls are limited and inconsistent. This study conducted a meta-analysis of cohort studies to compare the probability of suffering CKD and ESRD in patients with or without psoriasis.

Summary: This study analyzed the gene expression involved in kidney remodeling in end-stage kidney disease and the development of preneoplastic lesions and tumors. The results showed that both cellular (aSMA positive naive activated fibroblasts, endothelial cells, macrophages) and non-cellular components (cytokines IL6, TGF beta, IL1 beta, CSF2, fibronectin, laminin, and matrix modifier proteases MMP9 and MMP12) of the inflammatory microenvironment were present in the kidneys of patients with end-stage kidney disease. The inflammatory and fibrotic processes in end-stage kidney disease may explain the frequent development of kidney cancer.

Summary: This study compares glymphatic dysfunction between patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and healthy controls, and reveals the presence of glymphatic dysfunction in patients with ESRD as demonstrated by the DTI-ALPS index. Additionally, a significant positive correlation is found between the DTI-ALPS index and serum parathyroid hormone levels in ESRD patients.

Summary: This nationwide cohort study found that the incidence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) was higher in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and kidney transplantation recipients (KTRs) compared to healthy controls, but adjusting for confounding factors did not show a significant increase in risk. The incidence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) was higher in ESRD patients compared to healthy controls, while KTRs had a lower risk of PACG compared to ESRD patients.

Summary: This study investigated the tendency of senior medical students in Turkey to pursue their professional careers abroad and the factors related to their migration decisions. The findings showed that a significant percentage of medical students had emigration intentions, with a majority wanting to permanently stay abroad. Factors such as working conditions, social environment/lifestyle abroad, and the quality of medical schools were found to have a significant impact on their decisions.
