Summary: The study found that the expression of GP96 in PDE-EVs was significantly higher in the high PSTR group of peritoneal dialysis patients and was positively correlated with the inflammatory factor IL-6. GP96-enriched EVs enhanced the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines in macrophages, while a GP96 inhibitor reversed this process and reduced inflammation in a PD rat model.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of calprotectin in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and its associations with peritonitis and dialysis adequacy. The results showed that peritoneal calprotectin concentrations were correlated with higher BMI and ESR, and it was higher in patients with previous peritonitis episodes.

Summary: Long-term peritoneal dialysis can cause alterations in peritoneal function, such as high small solute transfer rates and impaired ultrafiltration, which are driven by peritoneal inflammation. A new hypothesis suggests that high glucose-induced pseudohypoxia plays a role in the development of these alterations. The high NADH-NAD1 ratio induced by glucose upregulates the expression of various profibrotic genes, leading to peritoneal fibrosis.

Summary: The study investigates the efficacy of the intraperitoneal inflammation marker, IL-6 level, as a predictor of UF insufficiency in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Results suggest that higher baseline dialysate IL-6 AR is associated with an increased risk of UF insufficiency, and IL-6 AR could be a potential predictor of UF insufficiency in these patients.

Summary: It was found in the study that patients on automated peritoneal dialysis with a dry day experienced lower ultrafiltration during initial exchanges, likely due to inflow of water into peritoneal tissue leading to increased hydration.

Summary: This study found that switching between different PD modalities can affect serum levels of phosphate, with CAPD being more effective at controlling phosphate levels than APD. However, the impact on potassium levels was similar across modality switches. Further exploration is needed to fully understand the clinical implications of higher removal of middle size molecules as a result of PD modalities.

Summary: This study investigated the involvement of IL-6 trans-signaling in DVT and found a strong correlation between the Asp358Ala variant and sIL6-R levels. The high frequency of the Asp358Ala mutation and elevated IL-6 levels in DVT patients may explain the association between IL-6 overactivation and DVT outcome. These findings provide a proof of concept for targeting IL-6 trans-signaling as a new strategy for DVT adjuvant therapy.

Summary: The study found that baseline high peritoneal solute transport rate (PSTR) is a significant risk factor for technique failure in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, while baseline hyperuricemia was an independent predictor of mortality. In vitro experiments revealed that hyperuricemia induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of peritoneal mesothelial cells, which could contribute to poor outcomes in PD patients.

Summary: This prospective observational study aimed to investigate the associations between dialysate IL-6, Tie2, and peritoneal solute transport rate (PSTR) in CAPD patients, as well as their predictive roles in outcomes. The results showed that high levels of IL-6 and Tie2 were associated with increased PSTR, and an increased D/Pcr ratio was a relative risk factor for mortality and technique failure in CAPD patients.

Summary: This study demonstrates that circulating IL-6 levels predict carotid plaque severity, vulnerability, and progression. A cutoff of 2.0 pg/mL for IL-6 levels could facilitate the selection of individuals that would benefit from anti-IL-6 drugs for stroke prevention.

Summary: The study found that two markers of systemic inflammation, TNF alpha and IL-1 beta, were independently associated with emphysema in PLWH, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of emphysema. The effect of IL-1 beta on emphysema appears to be mediated through pathways independent of excessive smoking.
