Summary: This study found that the prevalence of sleep disorders was significantly higher in patients with FD compared to healthy controls, with independent risk factors for sleep disorders including FD, female sex, and anxiety. In patients with FD, low body mass index, heartburn, and anxiety were identified as independent risk factors for sleep disorders.

Summary: Heartburn is a common symptom in daily clinical practice, often associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, it can also be caused by various factors and diseases other than GERD. Therefore, it is important for physicians to carefully differentiate between GERD and non-GERD conditions, especially when anti-reflux medications are not effective in treating heartburn.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the relationship between heartburn in pediatric patients with functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, finding that patients reporting heartburn were more likely to experience gastrointestinal symptoms, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression.

Summary: This study found that patients with functional dyspepsia have increased Th2 and Th17 lymphocyte populations in the duodenal mucosa, and these cells are of effector and memory phenotype, indicating that the microinflammation in functional dyspepsia may be antigen-driven.

Summary: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common esophageal disorder characterized by troublesome symptoms associated with increased esophageal acid exposure. Treatment typically includes acid-suppressive agents, lifestyle modifications, and dietary therapy. However, the role of diet in disease management lacks sufficient evidence, particularly in terms of the impact of functional foods.

Summary: This study identified increased expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and decreased abundance of dendritic cells in the mucosa of GERD patients, which may be related to neuronal sprouting and immune responses in GERD.

Summary: Through analysis of randomized controlled trials from various data sources, it was found that psychological therapy is beneficial for managing symptoms and improving quality of life in patients with FD. It is recommended that treating physicians consider the use of psychological therapy to improve symptoms in patients.

Summary: Nutritional ingredients have potential effectiveness in the management of upper gastrointestinal complaints, but further research is needed. Some ingredients, such as ginger and a combination of peppermint and caraway oil, have strong scientific evidence, while others, such as melatonin and marine alginate, have moderate evidence. Limited scientific substantiation exists for ingredients like galactomannan, fenugreek, and zinc-l-carnosine. More high-quality research is needed to provide precise and effective data for individuals with upper GI symptoms and conditions.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of air swallowing in the association between GERD symptoms and concomitant FD, as well as their role in GERD symptom persistence despite PPI therapy. It was found that individuals with excessive air swallowing experience FD, and GERD patients not responding to PPI therapy swallow more air during mealtime and also have more mixed refluxes.

Summary: Anxiety can worsen GERD and FD symptoms and negatively impact quality of life. Patients with moderate/severe anxiety are less likely to respond to PPI therapy, and they also tend to have excessive air swallowing.

Summary: This study found that patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) and gastroparesis were indistinguishable in terms of clinical and pathologic features or gastric emptying assessment in a tertiary referral setting. Gastric-emptying results were unreliable in capturing the pathophysiology of clinical symptoms in either condition, suggesting that FD and gastroparesis should be considered as part of the same spectrum of gastric neuromuscular disorders.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between epidemiological factors and comorbidities with GERD phenotypes, FD, and Rome-IV syndromes, as well as their relationship with anxiety/depression. The results showed that NERD and FD share demographic and psychopathological risk factors, suggesting they may belong to the same pathophysiological spectrum. Anxiety was predominant in NERD, while anxiety and depression coexisted in FD, indicating that both conditions may require complementary psychological therapy.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD). The results showed that CHM treatment had a significant improvement in the total effective rate of FD, as well as the reduction of symptoms and psychological disorders. However, more high-quality studies are needed to support these conclusions due to the limitations in the quantity and quality of the included studies.
