Summary: Sexually deceptive plants attract specific male insects for pollination by mimicking their characteristics. This study investigated the flower color biochemistry and gene expression patterns in different groups of the sexually deceptive orchid genus Chiloglottis using chemical and transcriptome analysis. The results showed that the dark calli/callus structures in these plants have conserved biochemical basis across the genus, but there are differences in the proportion of methoxylated anthocyanin and flavonol glycoside derivatives and gene expression levels between the Reflexa/Formicifera clades and the Valida clade.

Summary: Dendrobium is a species-rich genus of Paleotropical orchids, with over 1000 species, most of which are epiphytes. This study focused on the micromorphology of the labellum in 21 species of Dendrobium, revealing various types of trichomes and papillae. The presence/absence of labellum structures may not necessarily reflect phylogenetic relationships, as convergence can lead to similar structures in unrelated species.

Summary: The study identified panasenoside and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside as commonly accumulated flavonol glycosides in ginseng leaves with cultivation years. A total of 50 UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) were screened out to explore flavonol glycosylation in ginseng, with specific UGTs identified for the formation and modification of kaempferol 3-O-glucoside. The study highlights the significance of integrated metabolite profiles, proteomics, and phylogenetic analysis in understanding flavonol glycosylation pathways in ginseng.

Summary: Our study focuses on the Dendrobium orchids, which have large morphological divergence and difficulties in species taxonomy. We assembled the complete mitogenomes of two Dendrobium species and compared them with other orchids. The results reveal extensive variations in repetitive and chloroplast-derived sequences in Dendrobium mitogenomes, and the intergenic content has undergone expansion during evolution. We also sequenced the mitogenomes of 26 Dendrobium species and reconstructed their phylogenetic relationships based on mitochondrial and plastid data. The mitochondrial phylogeny shows partial characteristics of the plastid phylogeny and provides new insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Dendrobium species.

Summary: The study focuses on the reconstruction of mitochondrial genomes of angiosperms with a specific focus on Dendrobium species. The findings reveal the intricate nature of the mitochondrial genomes in Dendrobium, with frequent recombinations and structural variations. The study also explores the dynamic structures of the mitochondrial genomes by quantifying gene copy numbers and DNA contents. Additionally, the study compares the phylogenetic relationships of nuclear and mitochondrial genes, discovering discordance and inferring reticulate evolution and hybridization events in Dendrobium species.

Summary: The downregulation of the transcription factor CsERF003 can increase the contents of major flavonoids and the precursor phenylalanine in the mutant orange and result in darker fruit color in tomato. CsERF003 may be a potentially promising gene for fruit quality improvement and engineering of natural flavonoid components.

Summary: Herein, a two-step synthesis of 1-methyl-6H-indol-6-one, an N-containing 6/5 fused bicyclic building block in Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, is described. The key step involves a 'one-pot' ozonolysis/reductive amination/cyclization reaction of allylated cyclohexa-1,3-dione to yield bicyclic compounds. Furthermore, the formal total synthesis of natural product gamma-lycorane was accomplished through a photo-promoted cyclization/oxidation cascade reaction starting from the resulting bicyclic intermediate.
