Summary: This study investigated the contamination stage, attachment site, internalization pathway, proliferation process, extracellular substance secretion, and virulence factors expression of L. monocytogenes on iceberg lettuce. The results showed that the contamination stage occurred within 0-20 minutes, followed by proliferation. Attachment was observed in stomata and winkles. L. monocytogenes showed greater internalization distance in the midrib compared to the leaf blade. The up-regulation of flaA and motA genes enhanced cell movement, while the up-regulation of actA and inla genes enhanced adhesion, favoring proliferation. Cells gradually secreted extracellular substances to form biofilms, with a preference for the leaf blade.

Summary: In this study, the genus Chapsa in China was examined using morphological characteristics, chemical traits, and molecular phylogenetic analysis. A new species to science and two new records to China were identified. The newly discovered species, Chapsa murioelongata, is characterized by specific features and Chapsa wolseleyana was reclassified based on phenotypic traits. Sequence data and phylogenetic analyses supported the position of these species within the Chapsa genus. A key to known Chapsa species in China was provided.

Summary: The evolutionary history of the lichenized fungal order Peltigerales, particularly the Collematineae, has been successfully resolved using phylogenomic data, despite conflicting signal in exon trees. Rapid diversification events were identified in the early evolution of the suborder. A minimum subset of exons that could reconstruct phylogenetic relationships with higher support than the complete dataset was identified. Comparisons between the minimum and complete datasets showed similar results in species tree inferences, bipartition analyses, and divergence time estimations, although errors in divergence time estimations were higher in the minimum dataset. Target capture datasets yielded higher support values compared to topologies reconstructed using traditional nuclear and mitochondrial markers.

Summary: The study found that later developed stages of biocrusts exhibited higher values of ecosystem multifunctionality indices, while the diversity of 16S rRNA gene decreased with succession. The increasing relative abundance of non-cyanobacterial photosynthetic organisms was identified as the key predictor driving ecosystem multifunctionality indices during biocrust succession.

Summary: The study evaluated the factors affecting transformation efficiency in cabbage protoplasts for efficient delivery of the CRISPR/Cas9 vector. By optimizing the transformation protocol, a high editing efficiency was achieved. These findings have practical significance for successful genome editing in cabbage and other brassicas.

Summary: Climate change has negative impacts on agriculture, especially on plant growth and development, which will have strong consequences on future food availability. The effects of heavy rainfall events and waterlogging on different crops are still not well understood. This study investigated the effects of waterlogging on white cabbage, finding that it is not very sensitive to waterlogging, but repeated waterlogging can cause congestion stress.

Summary: Through our experiments, we found that a combination of 0.5% Cellulase Onozuka RS and 0.1% Macerozyme R-10 yielded the best results in isolating protoplasts from cabbage leaves. After three weeks in culture, protoplasts from all tested cabbage cultivars formed micro-calli, but further callus growth and shoot regeneration varied depending on the genotype and regeneration protocol used. The best regeneration results, with a rate of 23.5%, were obtained using a medium supplemented with 1 mg/L BAP and 0.2 mg/L NAA. These findings will contribute to the development of various applications for cabbage protoplasts and facilitate the breeding process of this important horticultural crop.

Summary: This study explores the interplay between elevated atmospheric CO2, drought stress, and plant physiological responses. The findings suggest that elevated CO2 accelerates assimilation rate decline during drought and influences photosynthetic components and electron transport. Additionally, drought-induced monoterpene emissions, polyphenols, flavonoid concentrations, and chlorophyll responses were affected by CO2 concentration and species-specific responses. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of CO2-drought interactions and their intricate effects on plant physiology.

Summary: This study found that the addition of antibiotics during lettuce production significantly decreased bacterial populations, with higher antibiotic concentrations leading to a greater decrease and the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, regulations must be developed and implemented to control antibiotic use on food crops to prevent the selection and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of three partially admixed phylogenetic species within the Pseudephebe genus, with one exhibiting an amphitropical distribution and the others having restricted distributions. The Quaternary glacial cycles strongly influenced their distribution, with a possible Northern Hemisphere origin for one of the species.

Summary: The use of biologically nitrified synthetic urine as a fertilizer for hydroponic cultivation of lettuce provides a nitrate-rich alternative to commercial fertilizers, reducing the reliance on natural resources and helping to address water scarcity. Enriched nitrified urine proves to be an excellent source of bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus in hydroponic systems, with comparable yield and quality parameters to traditional commercial fertilizers. The mass balance calculation suggests that large-scale lettuce production could be sustained by collecting urine from a relatively small number of people.

Summary: Correlations between the morphological traits of cabbage rosette leaves and heads were identified, and 50 robust quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were found through genome-wide association studies. Half of these loci affect both organs. This study provides valuable insights into the relationship and genetic basis of leaf development and leafy head formation in cabbage.

Summary: This study aims to microencapsulate Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata extract for controlled release of vitamin U for peptic ulcer treatment. The microcapsules were prepared using gelatin/gum Arabic and gelatin/sodium alginate as wall materials, and showed a homogeneous, spherical shell structure. In vitro release testing revealed that the gum Arabic-contained microcapsule had a maximum encapsulation efficiency of 86.92% and release rate of 93.6% in simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2) and simulated intestinal fluid (pH 7.4) for 48 hours.
