Summary: In this study, the mechanism of Aspergillus flavus conidia germination inhibition by decreased water activity was explored. The impact of low water activity on cell shape and size was analyzed. Transcriptomics and proteomics identified differentially expressed genes and proteins, with dominant pathways involved in nutrient metabolism and translation. Low water activity was found to inhibit conidia germination and influence the expression of genes related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, as well as translation in Aspergillus flavus.

Summary: Transcriptional activity of fungal conidia before dormancy plays a crucial role in conidia maturation, fitness, drug resistance, and virulence post-germination. The environmental-specific transcriptional responses can alter conidial content and gene expression, affecting the capabilities of fungal cells after germination. Fungal conidia prepare for the future by synthesizing and storing transcripts according to environmental conditions present before dormancy.

Summary: Aspergilli, including Aspergillusniger, Aspergillusoryzae, Aspergillusclavatus, Aspergillusnidulans, and Aspergillusterreus, are highly abundant fungi with the ability to degrade organic material and act as pathogens. This study found that the swelling and germ tube formation dynamics of conidia from these Aspergillus species differed in pure water and water supplemented with various nutrients. Intra-species heterogeneity was also observed, except for A.terreus, with sub-populations of conidia showing different dynamics based on size and/or contrast. These findings suggest that aspergilli exhibit different competitive potentials and have bet hedging mechanisms to optimize survival.

Summary: The study screened fungi in vitro for nematicidal potential and found that the fungal extract from Clonostachys rosea TH27 was most effective in controlling Meloidogyne incognita in greenhouse tomato plants. The extract significantly reduced the number of galls, eggs, and females in tomato roots, while slightly improving agronomic traits compared to untreated plants. Further research suggested that 2 g of inoculum per pot is recommended for controlling M. incognita in pots under protected conditions.

Summary: Asexually reproducing fungi play significant roles in ecosystems and have implications for plant and animal health, food production, biotechnology, and medicine. However, the diversity and extent of asexually reproducing taxa are not well-known. Recent reports suggest that there may be more asexual fungi than sexually-reproducing ones. Evaluating the diversity of different types of fungi, such as speciose and pleomorphic taxa, as well as those from less studied life modes and biodiversity-rich areas, is necessary to obtain more reliable estimates.

Summary: This study presents the antifungal, biosurfactant, and bioemulsifying activity of lipopeptides produced by the marine bacterium Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii MC6B-22. The lipopeptide, mycosubtilin, exhibited broad-spectrum activity against ten phytopathogens and showed a fungicidal mode of action. It also demonstrated stable biosurfactant and bioemulsifying activities over a wide range of salinity and pH. These findings highlight the potential of the MC6B-22 strain as a biocontrol agent for agriculture and its applications in bioremediation and other biotechnological fields.
