A new species of Heliocephala from Mexico with an assessment of the systematic positions of the anamorph genera Heliocephala and Holubovaniella

During a study of the microfungi on decaying leaves collected in Mexico we encountered a fungus sharing features of the anamorph genera Heliocephala and Holubovaniella. This hyphomycete resembled Hol. elegans in possessing obclavate to fusiform, three-septate, rostrate phragmoconidia, but it can be distinguished by its much shorter, branched, determinate conidiophores. Unlike members of genus Heliocephala, which also possess determinant conidiophores, the phragmoconidia of this taxon are short-rostrate and have not been observed to germinate iteratively. Prompted by the discovery of this hyphomycete, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships among species of Heliocephala and Holubovaniella. Analysis of large subunit rDNA gene sequences positioned species of Heliocephala and Holubovaniella in the Dothideomycetes and identified Stomiopeltis betulae (Micropeltididaceae) as their closest relative. These results also indicated that Heliocephala and Holubovaniella are closely related taxa. Based on these findings and the similarity of the developmental and morphological characters of species of Heliocephala and Holubovaniella, we recognize these genera as synonymous and describe a new species, Heliocephala triseptata. A dichotomous key to the species of Heliocephala is provided.

Clonostachys Rosea selected by nematicidal screening and its efficacy against Meloidogyne incognita in a greenhouse

Summary: The study screened fungi in vitro for nematicidal potential and found that the fungal extract from Clonostachys rosea TH27 was most effective in controlling Meloidogyne incognita in greenhouse tomato plants. The extract significantly reduced the number of galls, eggs, and females in tomato roots, while slightly improving agronomic traits compared to untreated plants. Further research suggested that 2 g of inoculum per pot is recommended for controlling M. incognita in pots under protected conditions.

Enzymatic Bioprospecting of Fungi Isolated from a Tropical Rainforest in Mexico

Summary: Asexually reproducing fungi play significant roles in ecosystems and have implications for plant and animal health, food production, biotechnology, and medicine. However, the diversity and extent of asexually reproducing taxa are not well-known. Recent reports suggest that there may be more asexual fungi than sexually-reproducing ones. Evaluating the diversity of different types of fungi, such as speciose and pleomorphic taxa, as well as those from less studied life modes and biodiversity-rich areas, is necessary to obtain more reliable estimates.

Broad-Spectrum Antifungal, Biosurfactants and Bioemulsifier Activity of Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii-A Potential Biocontrol and Bioremediation Agent in Agriculture

Summary: This study presents the antifungal, biosurfactant, and bioemulsifying activity of lipopeptides produced by the marine bacterium Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii MC6B-22. The lipopeptide, mycosubtilin, exhibited broad-spectrum activity against ten phytopathogens and showed a fungicidal mode of action. It also demonstrated stable biosurfactant and bioemulsifying activities over a wide range of salinity and pH. These findings highlight the potential of the MC6B-22 strain as a biocontrol agent for agriculture and its applications in bioremediation and other biotechnological fields.
