We present a detailed study of an estimator of the H i column density, based on a combination of H i 21 cm absorption and H i 21cm emission spectroscopy. This 'isothermal' estimate is given by N-HI,N- ISO = 1.823 x 10(18) integral [tau(tot) x T-B / [ 1 - e(tot)(-tau)]dV, where tau(tot) is the total H i 21cm optical depth along the sightline and T-B is the measured brightness temperature. We have used a Monte Carlo simulation to quantify the accuracy of the isothermal estimate by comparing the derived N-HI,N- ISO with the true H i column density N-HI. The simulation was carried out for a wide range of sightlines, including gas in different temperature phases and random locations along the path. We find that the results are statistically insensitive to the assumed gas temperature distribution and the positions of different phases along the line of sight. The median value of the ratio of the true H i column density to the isothermal estimate, N-HI/N-HI,N- ISO, is within a factor of 2 of unity while the 68.2 per cent confidence intervals are within a factor of approximate to 3 of unity, out to high H i column densities, < 5 x 10(23) cm(-2) per 1 km s(-1) channel, and high total optical depths, < 1000. The isothermal estimator thus provides a significantly better measure of the H i column density than other methods, within a factor of a few of the true value even at the highest columns, and should allow us to directly probe the existence of high H i column density gas in the Milky Way.

Possible TeV Gamma-Ray Binary Origin of HESS J1828-099

Agnibha De Sarkar, Nirupam Roy, Pratik Majumdar, Nayantara Gupta, Andreas Brunthaler, Karl M. Menten, Sergio A. Dzib, Sac Nicte X. Medina, Friedrich Wyrowski

Summary: The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) observatory has confirmed the existence of a significant number of unidentified TeV gamma-ray sources through a deep survey of the Galactic plane. HESS J1828-099 is one of the 17 confirmed point-like sources in the survey and stands out because it lacks association with other objects detected at different wavelengths. This study investigates the nature and association of HESS J1828-099 using multiwavelength observational data, and suggests that it may be a TeV high-mass gamma-ray binary source.

High-resolution Observations of H i in the IC 63 Reflection Nebula

Lars Bonne, B-G Andersson, Robert Minchin, Archana Soam, Joshua Yaldaei, Kristin Kulas, Janik Karoly, Lewis B. G. Knee, Siddharth Kumar, Nirupam Roy

Summary: Interferometric observations of the nearby reflection nebula IC 63 reveal clumpy atomic hydrogen structures and a ring morphology in the photodissociation region (PDR). Kinematic substructures and a lack of a well-defined H i/H-2 transition front are also observed. The contribution of H i self-absorption and nonequilibrium chemistry to the clumpy morphology and missing transition front remains uncertain.

First Multi-redshift Limits on Post-Epoch of Reionization 21 cm Signal from z=1.96-3.58 Using uGMRT

Summary: Measurement of fluctuations in diffuse Hi 21 cm background radiation from the post-reionization epoch (z <= 6) provides stringent upper limits on the spherically averaged 21 cm power spectra and constrains the product of the neutral Hi mass density and Hi bias to the underlying dark matter density field at different redshifts. These results are the first limits on the Hi 21 cm power spectra in the redshift range z = 1.96-3.58 and are essential for constraining models of galaxy formation and evolution.
