We present integral field spectroscopy of the inner 700 x 700 pc(2) of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 1066 obtained with Gemini's Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) at a spatial resolution of approximate to 35 pc. This high spatial resolution allowed us to observe, for the first time in this galaxy, an unresolved dust concentration with mass similar to 1.4 x 10(-2) M(circle dot). This unresolved concentration, with emission well reproduced by a blackbody with temperature similar to 830 K, is possibly part of the nuclear dusty torus. We compared maps of emission-line flux distributions and ratios with a 3.6 cm radio-continuum image and [O III] image in order to investigate the origin of the near-infrared emission. The emission-line fluxes are elongated in PA = 135 degrees/315 degrees in agreement with the [O III] and radio images and, except for the II lines, are brighter to the north-west than to the south-east. This close association with the radio hot spot implies that at least part of the emitting gas is co-spatial with the radio outflow. The II emission is stronger to the south-east, where we find a large region of star-formation. The strong correlation between the radio emission and the highest emission-line fluxes indicates that the radio jet plays a fundamental role at these intensity levels. At lower emission-line fluxes this correlation disappears suggesting a contribution from the plane of the galaxy to the observed emission. The H(2) flux is more uniformly distributed and has an excitation temperature of approximate to 2100 K. Its origin appears to be circum-nuclear gas heated by X-rays from the central active nucleus. The [Fe II] emission also is consistent with X-ray heating, but its spatial correlation with the radio jet and [O III] emission indicates additional emission due to excitation and/or abundance changes caused by shocks in the radio jet. The coronal-line emission of [Ca VIII] and [S IX] is unresolved by our observations indicating a distribution within 18 pc from the nucleus. The reddening map obtained via the Pa beta/Br gamma line ratio ranges from E(B - V) approximate to 0 to 1.7 with the highest values defining a S-shaped structure along PA approximate to 135 degrees/315 degrees. The emission- line ratios are Seyfert-like within the ionization cone indicating that the line emission is powered by the central active nucleus in these locations. Low ionization regions are observed away from the ionization cone, and may be powered by the diffuse radiation field which filters through the ionization cone walls. Two regions at 0.5 arcsec south-east and at 1 arcsec northwest of the nucleus show starburst-like line ratios, co-spatial with an enhancement in the emission of the H lines. We attribute this change to additional emission from star-forming regions. The mass of ionized gas is M(H II) approximate to 1.7 x 10(7) M(circle dot) and that of hot molecular gas is M(H2) approximate to 3.3 x 10(3)M(circle dot).

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Exploring the Local Scaling Relations for N/O

Adam L. Schaefer, Christy Tremonti, Guinevere Kauffmann, Brett H. Andrews, Matthew A. Bershady, Nicholas F. Boardman, Kevin Bundy, Niv Drory, Jose G. Fernandez-Trincado, Holly P. Preece, Rogerio Riffel, Rogemar A. Riffel, Sebastian F. Sanchez

Summary: We present the relationship between local stellar mass surface density (sigma(*)) and N/O derived from SDSS-IV MaNGA data for the first time. We find that sigma(*) alone is insufficient to predict the N/O in MaNGA spaxels and there is an additional dependence on the local star formation rate surface density (sigma(SFR)). Furthermore, we show that the local N/O scaling relations also depend on the total galaxy stellar mass and galaxy size.

Summary: This paper quantifies the temporal variability and image morphology of the horizon-scale emission from Sgr A* observed by the EHT in 2017. It finds that the data exhibit significant variability exceeding uncertainties and scattering effects. Geometric ring models provide better fits to the data, and the diameter and thickness of the ring are determined through modeling and image-domain analysis techniques.

Summary: This study presents the first observations of Sagittarius A* using the Event Horizon Telescope. The data supports the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, with an image that is consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole. The results also connect dynamical measurements of stellar orbits to event-horizon-scale images.

Summary: Recent advancements in VLBI have enabled the EHT to observe and analyze the inner accretion flows of large supermassive black holes. The sparse coverage of the EHT poses a challenge in resolving highly time-variable sources. However, the changing coverage of the EHT can contain time regions within a single observation that facilitate dynamic imaging. A metric based on baseline isotropy and density is introduced to rank array configurations for accurate dynamic reconstructions.

Gemini NIFS survey of feeding and feedback processes in nearby active galaxies - VI. Stellar populations

Rogerio Riffel, Luis G. Dahmer-Hahn, Rogemar A. Riffel, Thaisa Storchi-Bergmann, Natacha Z. Dametto, Richard Davies, Leonard Burtscher, Marina Bianchin, Daniel Ruschel-Dutra, Claudio Ricci, David J. Rosario

Summary: We used NIFS and other equipment to study the stellar population of 18 nearby Seyfert galaxies in the inner few hundred parsecs and found a significant fraction of young to intermediate-age stellar populations. The study also revealed correlations between the stellar population properties and other properties of the galaxies, such as the X-ray luminosity and the contributions from hot dust, featureless continuum, and reddening. Additionally, there was a delayed relationship between the mass-weighted mean age of the stellar population and the triggering/feeding of the active galactic nuclei (AGN), and the gas reaching the supermassive black hole may originate from the mass loss of intermediate-age stellar populations.

Gas-phase metallicity determinations in nearby AGNs with SDSS-IV MaNGA: evidence of metal-poor accretion

Janaina C. do Nascimento, Oli L. Dors, Thaisa Storchi-Bergmann, Nicolas D. Mallmann, Rogerio Riffel, Gabriele S. Ilha, Rogemar A. Riffel, Sandro B. Rembold, Alice Deconto-Machado, Luiz N. da Costa, Mark Armah

Summary: In this study, we investigated the metallicity of the narrow-line region (NLR) of 108 Seyfert galaxies using data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We compared the NLR metallicity to the extrapolated value and found that it is lower for most objects, possibly due to the accretion of metal-poor gas to the AGN. We also discovered an inverse correlation between the difference in metallicity and electron density, stellar mass, and extinction coefficient.

How well do local relations predict gas-phase metallicity gradients? Results from SDSS-IV MaNGA

N. Boardman, G. Zasowski, J. A. Newman, S. F. Sanchez, B. Andrews, J. K. Barrera-Ballesteros, J. Lian, R. Riffel, R. A. Riffel, A. Schaefer, K. Bundy

Summary: Gas-phase metallicity gradients provide clues to the formation histories of galaxies, and the most extended galaxies display steeper gradients. By examining local relations, we can qualitatively predict the gradient behavior on the mass-size plane, but there are some discrepant gradients that need to be explained by physical causes.

Warm molecular and ionized gas kinematics in the type-2 quasar J0945+1737

G. Speranza, C. Ramos Almeida, J. A. Acosta-Pulido, R. A. Riffel, C. Tadhunter, J. C. S. Pierce, A. Rodriguez-Ardila, M. Coloma Puga, M. Brusa, B. Musiimenta, D. M. Alexander, A. Lapi, F. Shankar, C. Villforth

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the NIFS observations of the type-2 quasar SDSS J094521.33 +173753.2 to study the warm molecular and ionized gas kinematics. Our analysis revealed rotation in all the detected emission lines and also outflowing gas in the low and high ionization lines. The presence of extended radio emission aligned with the ionized gas suggests that it might be compressed and accelerated by the shocks generated by the radio jet.

Summary: We observed the calibrator source J1924-2914 for Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), and obtained the first high-resolution images. This compact radio source shows strong optical variability and polarization. Our observations reveal a characteristic bending in the jet and provide evidence for ordered toroidal magnetic fields in the core of the blazar.

Detailed Accretion History of the Supermassive Black Hole in NGC 5972 over the Past ≳104 yr through the Extended Emission-line Region

C. Finlez, E. Treister, F. Bauer, W. Keel, M. Koss, N. Nagar, L. Sartori, W. P. Maksym, G. Venturi, D. Tubin, T. Harvey

Summary: We present integral field spectroscopic observations of NGC 5972, a nearby galaxy with an active galactic nucleus and an extended emission-line region. The kinematic analysis reveals multiple components and suggests a major past interaction event. By fitting photoionization models, we estimate the required bolometric luminosity and find that NGC 5972 is a fading quasar.

The Interplay between Radio AGN Activity and Their Host Galaxies

Guilherme S. Couto, Thaisa Storchi-Bergmann

Summary: Radio activity in AGN produces feedback on the host galaxy through relativistic jets, resulting in outflows and shock signatures. Galaxy mergers and interactions trigger radio AGN, and the jets interact with gas causing outflows. Observations show that the outflows heat the ISM gas, preventing star formation and limiting the growth of the host galaxy. The feedback plays a role in maintaining the galaxy's mass build-up process.
