The decomposition of a signal on the sphere with the steerable wavelet constructed from the second Gaussian derivative gives access to the orientation, signed-intensity and elongation of the signal's local features. In the present work, the non-Gaussianity of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) temperature data of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is analysed in terms of the first four moments of the statistically isotropic random fields associated with these local morphological measures, at wavelet scales corresponding to angular sizes between 27.5 arcmin and 30 degrees on the celestial sphere. While no detection is made either in the orientation analysis or in the elongation analysis, a strong detection is made in the excess kurtosis of the signed-intensity of the WMAP data. The non-Gaussianity is observed with a significance level below 0.5 per cent at a wavelet scale corresponding to an angular size around 10 degrees, and confirmed at neighbouring scales. This supports a previous detection of an excess of kurtosis in the wavelet coefficient of the WMAP data with the axisymmetric Mexican hat wavelet. Instrumental noise and foreground emissions are not likely to be at the origin of the excess of kurtosis. Large-scale modulations of the CMB related to some unknown systematics are rejected as possible origins of the detection. The observed non-Gaussianity may therefore probably be imputed to the CMB itself, thereby questioning the basic inflationary scenario upon which the present concordance cosmological model relies. Taking the CMB temperature angular power spectrum of the concordance cosmological model at face value, further analysis also suggests that this non-Gaussianity is not confined to the directions on the celestial sphere with an anomalous signed-intensity.

Image reconstruction algorithms in radio interferometry: From handcrafted to learned regularization denoisers

Matthieu Terris, Arwa Dabbech, Chao Tang, Yves Wiaux

Summary: We introduce a new class of iterative image reconstruction algorithms for radio interferometry, at the interface of convex optimization and deep learning, inspired by plug-and-play methods. The proposed AIRI ('AI for Regularization in radio-interferometric Imaging') framework combines deep neural networks as denoisers with optimization algorithms to improve the imaging quality and speed in radio interferometry. Simulation results show that AIRI is competitive in imaging quality with existing optimization algorithms, while providing significant acceleration.

Summary: The polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be used to search for parity-violating processes through cosmic birefringence. This study examines the impact of Galactic foreground emission and instrumental systematics on birefringence measurements using simulations from the Planck mission. The results demonstrate the methodology's robustness against mis-calibration and systematic effects, but highlight the need for improved dust templates and a better understanding of dust beyond the modified blackbody paradigm.

Summary: LiteBIRD is a future satellite mission aimed at observing the polarization of cosmic microwave background radiation to study the inflationary universe. The mission will use three telescopes equipped with transition-edge sensor bolometers. This study estimated the instrumental sensitivity of LiteBIRD based on its current design, taking into account the detector noise from optical loadings as well as thermal carrier and readout noise. The observational sensitivities for fifteen bands specifically designed for LiteBIRD telescopes were calculated assuming a certain observation time efficiency.

Summary: The QUIJOTE-MFI Northern Hemisphere Wide Survey has produced Spectral Energy Distributions of AME on a sample of 52 candidate compact sources. Our analysis reveals 44 sources with high AME significance. The study shows a strong correlation between thermal dust and AME, but no correlation between AME emissivity and free-free radiation Emission Measure.

Summary: This paper presents a reanalysis of the Haze, including new observations from the Multi-Frequency Instrument (MFI) of the Q-U-I Joint TEnerife (QUIJOTE) experiment. An excess of diffuse intensity signal and polarized signal in the Haze area are detected, and their spectra are characterized. The results reveal differences in the spectrum of the Haze compared to Galactic synchrotron and the presence of polarized structures associated with Galactic Centre activity.

Parallel faceted imaging in radio interferometry via proximal splitting (Faceted HyperSARA): I. Algorithm and simulations

Pierre-Antoine Thouvenin, Abdullah Abdulaziz, Arwa Dabbech, Audrey Repetti, Yves Wiaux

Summary: Upcoming radio interferometers aim to achieve high-resolution and high-sensitivity imaging of the sky, with the SKA reaching a petabyte scale. Modern proximal optimization algorithms outperform clean techniques by injecting complex image models for regularization and parallelizing large data volumes with splitting functionality. This study introduces the "Faceted HyperSARA" algorithm, which decomposes the image cube into spatiospectral facets and enables parallel processing of facet-specific regularization terms. The algorithm also incorporates reliable heuristics for automatic setting of regularization parameters. Simulation results confirm the increased parallelization capability of faceting compared to the non-faceted approach (HyperSARA).

Summary: We use a combination of data from various telescopes to obtain linearly polarized astrophysical component maps of the Northern Sky. The addition of QUIJOTE-MFI data improves the estimation of low-frequency foregrounds, particularly the synchrotron spectral index. We observe spatial variability in the beta(s) map and find that the power-law model of synchrotron emission fits well outside the Galactic plane but not within it. We also estimate thermal dust spectral parameters and find strong correlation with the Planck release.

Summary: We present a catalogue of Q-U-I JOint TEnerife (QUIJO TE) Wide Survey radio sources extracted from maps compiled between 2012 and 2018. The catalogue contains 786 sources observed in intensity and polarization, with a significant fraction located within the Galactic plane region. We determine statistical and polarimetric properties for the sources, finding them to be consistent with current models and literature results for both flat- and steep-spectrum radio sources.

Optimization of a Microwave Polarimeter for Astronomy with Optical Correlation and Detection

Guillermo Pascual-Cisneros, Francisco J. J. Casas, Patricio Vielva

Summary: The detection of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) B-modes is crucial for future CMB experiments as it provides valuable information about the physics of the early universe. To achieve this, an optimized polarimeter demonstrator was developed to be sensitive to the 10-20 GHz band. The demonstrator modulates the received signals into Near Infrared (NIR) laser, optically correlates them, and uses photonic back-end modules for detection. The issue of low phase stability was addressed with a calibration method to remove the related 1/f-like noise signal.
