Summary: Two pairs of new isobenzofuranone derivative enantiomers, (+/-)-penicifurans E (1) and (+/-)-penicifurans F (2), along with four known compounds (3-6), were discovered from the solid fermentation of Penicillium canescens DWS225. Their structures were determined through extensive NMR spectroscopic analysis, and their absolute configurations were confirmed by experimental and calculated ECD data. Furthermore, the neuroprotective effects of all the isolated compounds against oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion injury in PC12 cells were investigated.

Summary: Endophytic fungi, such as Paraconiothyrium brasiliense, are rich sources of bioactive metabolites with potential biomedical applications. This study isolated PB from Capsicum annuum fruit and evaluated its biochemical, antimicrobial, antioxidant, cell viability, and cytotoxicity properties. Results showed that PB-EAE exhibited significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, while GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of various volatile molecules. Molecular docking analysis also demonstrated significant interactions between compounds in PB-EAE and the target protein DHPS. This study suggests that endophytic P. brasiliense could be a valuable source of antimicrobials.

Summary: In this study, F. oxysporum GU-7 and GU-60 were isolated from Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and their antioxidant activities were found to be significantly different. Metabolomics analysis identified abundant dipeptides, phenolic acids, and plant-derived coumarins in GU-7, which may account for its stronger antioxidant activity compared to GU-60. The study also identified key genes and intermediate metabolites involved in coumarin biosynthesis.

Summary: Thirty-five ketone-isobenzofuranone hybrids were synthesized and evaluated for their herbicidal activity. The location and type of substituent were found to be crucial for activity, with o-substituted derivatives performing better than m- and p-substituted derivatives. Compounds with strong electron-donating groups had low activity, while those with heterocycles showed moderate herbicidal effects. Compounds with weak electron-donating groups and electron-withdrawing groups showed promising herbicidal activity, with o-F substituted compound being the most effective against Chinese amaranth and o-Cl substituted compound being the most potent against barnyard grass.

Summary: Tea plants are affected by biotic stress and extreme weather, which can reduce yield and quality. Anthracnose, a common and serious disease, has gained attention as its control relies on chemical pesticides. This study investigates the impact of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on anthracnose development in tea plants and identifies relevant mechanisms through transcriptome analysis. Results show that AMF inoculation significantly reduces anthracnose damage on tea seedlings and increases the antioxidant system's activity, suggesting the potential use of AMF as a biological control method in tea plantations.

Summary: The extracellular serine protease produced by Acremonium sp. L1-4B isolated from the Antarctic continent was used to hydrolyze bovine and caprine sodium caseinate, resulting in protein hydrolysates with antioxidant and antihypertensive potential. Mass spectrometry characterization revealed differences in peptide sequences between the bovine and caprine hydrolysates, indicating the potential for developing new functional foods and nutraceutical formulations.
