Despite increasing awareness of the need to trace the trajectory of innovation system research, so far little attention has been given to quantitative depiction of the evolution of this fast-moving research field. This paper uses CiteSpace to demonstrate visually intellectual structures and developments. The study uses citation analysis to detect and visualize disciplinary distributions, keyword co-word networks and journal cocitation networks, highly cited references, as well as highly cited authors to identify intellectual turning points, pivotal points and emerging trends, in innovation systems system research from 1975 to 2012.

Area Development and Policy, the Greater BRICS and a new world order

Michael Dunford, Weidong Liu, Christophe Pompeani

Summary: The establishment of new international institutions by emerging economies has sparked interest in how their growth is reshaping the global order. It is found that emerging economies are stronger in terms of real production compared to GDP data, especially in energy, minerals, food, and vital necessities. The establishment of new international trade and payment systems may also lead to a geographical redistribution of services, with Western economies currently dominating.

Causes of the Crisis in Ukraine

Michael Dunford

Summary: The military conflict between Russia and Ukraine is primarily driven by two interconnected factors. Firstly, the expansion of NATO, in violation of previous commitments made during the reunification of Germany, poses a threat to Russia's security. Secondly, deep internal divisions in Ukraine, fueled by ethnic nationalism and divisive national identity, have resulted in demands for regional autonomy and a civil war that has not been effectively resolved by successive governments and external parties. Throughout this conflict, Ukraine has been used as a tool by the United States to weaken a strategic rival and maintain the unipolar world order. The ultimate outcome of this conflict is likely to result in significant losses for Ukraine, Europe, and Germany, while potentially hastening the transition to a new multipolar world order.

The Chinese Path to Common Prosperity

Michael Dunford

Summary: The concept of common prosperity in China can be traced back to 1953. In 1979, China chose to prioritize the enrichment of certain individuals and regions to accelerate economic development. However, this led to significant income and wealth inequalities in urban-rural, regional, and social areas. Since 1999, China has been addressing these disparities in the name of common prosperity, with a stronger emphasis under the leadership of Xi Jinping on innovation, improved governance, and ecological and spiritual civilization. Starting in 2020, the government has taken strong actions against the disorderly expansion of private capital and monopolies, aiming to reshape income distribution and address uneven development.
