Summary: Takayasu Arteritis (TAK) is a rare inflammatory disease affecting the large blood vessels, causing severe manifestations in both systemic and local tissues. Despite newer understanding of its pathogenesis, there is still a lack of long-term data in children and the prognosis remains uncertain, with a high disease burden.

Summary: Cell sex is important in biomedical research, but the sex of cells derived from organs other than reproductive tissue is often overlooked. However, accumulating data show that genes expressed off sex chromosomes have a broad impact on various cells. Moreover, AJP-Cell Physiology requires clear indication of the source of all cells used when submitting an article. Nearly a decade later, it is important to evaluate if improvements have been made in the description of cells and cell lines used in publications submitted to AJP-Cell Physiology.

Summary: Childhood trauma may impact the severity of depressive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, with differences between sexes. Depressive symptoms in men were associated with total trauma scores and emotional abuse, while in women they were associated with sexual abuse. Negative symptoms in men were linked to total trauma scores and emotional neglect, while in women there was no clear link potentially due to statistical power limitations.

Summary: Pediatric adrenocortical hyperplasias are rare conditions characterized by Cushing syndrome and genetic defects affecting the adrenal cortex. Most cases are caused by defects in the cyclic AMP/protein kinase A (cAMP/PKA) pathway, while a few cases have unidentified genetic defects. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, mainly due to steroidogenic enzyme deficiencies, is another cause of adrenal hyperplasia in childhood.

Summary: Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a complex autoimmune condition characterized by unpredictable flare and high morbidity and mortality rates. Treatment mainly involves antimalarials and glucocorticoids, with newer options such as biologic agents showing promise for future use in pediatric patients. Additionally, management practices for cSLE patients include regular evaluations, vaccinations, physical activity, and addressing mental health issues.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a chronic and highly individualized disease characterized by a variety of symptoms that can occur with different severity levels. The incidence of the disease increases with age, especially in middle-aged and elderly patients. Clinical diagnosis and treatment are crucial for the involvement of patients' families and caregivers.

Summary: Childhood-onset schizophrenia is a rare and severe form of schizophrenia that shares phenotypic features and genetic etiology with Autism spectrum disorder. There is increasing research on the co-occurrence of psychomotor syndromes like catatonia with neurodevelopmental disorders like ASD or psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. The 'Iron Triangle' theory suggests a single underlying pathology resulting in a unique mixed form of catatonia, autism, and psychosis. This case highlights the overlapping diagnostic features of these disorders and the need for further study.

Summary: Sex and age of onset are crucial factors influencing cognition in schizophrenia. Females have higher age and age of onset, while males perform better in executive functions. Late-onset patients have better verbal memory performance, while early-onset patients have lower IQ. There is an interaction effect between sex and age at onset, with early-onset being associated with worse global cognition only in male patients.

Summary: This study found an association between childhood cancer and birth defects, with a stronger association observed among females. However, birth defects did not fully explain the differences in childhood cancer risk by sex, suggesting the involvement of other biological pathways.

Summary: This study compared the content of ribosomal repeats in the leucocyte DNA of children with schizophrenia, children with ASD, and healthy age-matched controls. The results showed that the DNA of children with schizophrenia had significantly higher copy numbers of ribosomal repeats than those with ASD and the healthy controls.

Summary: Differences between the sexes exist in many diseases, but it is not as clear in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) due to various factors such as duration of diabetes, glycemic control, and other risk factors. Sex-specific factors like puberty or menopause also play a role in microvascular complications for both males and females. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on sex-related aspects in the development, progression, and treatment strategies of DKD, including findings from preclinical research.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between sensory gating deficits, childhood trauma, and schizophrenia onset. It is found that patients with first-episode schizophrenia have more severe childhood trauma experiences and sensory gating deficits. Sensory gating deficits might mediate the effects of childhood trauma on the onset of schizophrenia.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of a giant sex chromosome in cichlid fish, finding that it consists of three distinct regions and contains unprecedented amounts of endogenous retroviral elements, immunoglobulin genes, and long non-coding RNAs. Comparative analysis across 69 teleost genomes supports the hypothesis that the giant sex chromosome originated from the fusion of a B chromosome.

Summary: Lymphatic anomalies encompass a range of disorders, from common localized lymphatic malformations to rare complex lymphatic anomalies. Imaging diagnosis of cystic lymphatic malformations is relatively straightforward, but diagnosing complex lymphatic anomalies can be more challenging. Radiologists play a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of complex lymphatic anomalies, and being familiar with the spectrum of entities and their typical imaging findings is important.

Summary: The study identified an EIF3F variant associated with neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by intellectual disability, epilepsy, and other symptoms. Patients showed developmental delays, behavioral problems, hearing loss, and short stature, with some also exhibiting microcephaly and reduced sensitivity to pain. A compound heterozygous individual had severe symptoms, suggesting genotype-phenotype correlation.

Summary: Offspring of depressed parents show reduced neural response to winning reward in the ventral striatum. Neural reward alterations may emerge earlier than expected, as early as 6-8 years old, particularly in the context of maternal discouragement of child positive emotion. Clinical interventions that focus on coaching mothers to encourage child positive emotions could support child reward-related brain development.

Summary: This article describes a collaborative process to provide core cultural competency recommendations for training healthcare and social service providers for LGBTQIA+ patients. The recommendations, developed through a synthesis of research, training, and stakeholder feedback, focus on knowing the audience, developing and fine-tuning the curriculum, employing different learning theories, choosing effective trainers, and evaluating the impact of training. These recommendations contribute to advancing SGD health equity in healthcare and social services.

Summary: Through a systematic review, this study identified limited medical education curricula for the healthcare of SGM/DSD individuals. These curricula primarily focused on knowledge retention and clinical skills acquisition, but few fully aligned with the AAMC's SGM/DSD competency recommendations. Additionally, there was no inclusion of teaching SGM/DSD healthcare for individuals with multiply minoritized identities or engaging the broader SGM/DSD community in curriculum development and implementation.

Summary: Research shows that gender nonconformity is associated with LGB individuals experiencing more prejudice events, less concealment of sexual orientation, lower internalized homonegativity, and a higher expectation of rejection related to sexual orientation. The association between gender nonconformity and prejudice events is stronger among gay and bisexual men compared to lesbian and bisexual women. Gender nonconformity is systematically linked to minority stress experiences among LGB individuals, with future research needing to further explore this relationship in order to understand the impact on health outcomes within LGB populations.
