Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by dermotropic Leishmania species belonging to the Viannia subgenera, with Leishmania (V.) braziliensis considered the main agent in Brazil. After infection, a local inflammatory process is initiated, inducing the expression of several cytokine/chemokine genes. We evaluated the immunity to CL of patients living in the indigenous community Xakriaba, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, by performing detailed analyses of the mRNA expression of different cytokines and chemokines in CL lesions, considering the time evolution (recent or late). We also studied the profile of the inflammatory infiltrate by histopathological analysis. The histopathological features of recent CL lesions showed an intense inflammatory reaction, characterized by the presence of both mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells, whereas late CL lesions exhibited a predominance of mononuclear leukocytes. The gene expression of cytokines/chemokines in skin biopsies from the CL group showed higher transcript levels of modulatory (IL10 and TGFB1), anti-inflammatory (IL4), and pro-inflammatory (TNF, IFNG, IL12B, CCL2, CCL3, CCL5, CXCL10) biomarkers in recent lesions than in late lesions. Our findings suggest that differential gene expression of cytokines and chemokines found in skin lesions from CL patients is associated with time evolution of lesions. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Solar photon-Fenton process eliminates free plasmid DNA harboring antimicrobial resistance genes from wastewater

Pamela B. Vilela, Alessandra S. Martins, Maria Clara V. M. Starling, Felipe A. R. de Souza, Giovana F. F. Pires, Ananda P. Aguilar, Maria Eduarda A. Pinto, Tiago A. O. Mendes, Camila C. de Amorim

Summary: This study evaluated the elimination and inactivation of resistance-conferring plasmids (RCPs) in secondary wastewater using solar photo-Fenton, showing enhanced performance compared to the dark Fenton process. Solar photo-Fenton completely removed RCPs and rapidly inactivated target RCPs, demonstrating the potential to improve wastewater quality and reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of anthropization processes on the composition of sand fly fauna and natural infection by Trypanosomatids. The results showed that sand flies from different landscapes were infected with Trypanosomatids, and some parasite species may play a role in the transmission of leishmaniasis.

Ceftriaxone causes dysbiosis and changes intestinal structure in adjuvant obesity treatment

Sandra Aparecida dos Reis Louzano, Mariana de Moura e Dias, Lisiane Lopes da Conceicao, Tiago Antonio de Oliveira Mendes, Maria do Carmo Gouveia Peluzio

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the treatment of obesity with antimicrobial and potential probiotics. Results indicated that using ceftriaxone alone or in combination with the potential probiotic reduced body fat, but the negative impact of ceftriaxone on the intestinal microbiota composition may have led to intestinal dysbiosis, destroying villi structure and reducing absorptive surface.

Characterization of Differentially Abundant Proteins Among Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis Strains Isolated From Atypical or Typical Lesions

Barbara B. Esteves, Marcella N. Melo-Braga, Vladimir Gorshkov, Thiago Verano-Braga, Martin R. Larsen, Celia M. F. Gontijo, Patricia F. Quaresma, Helida M. Andrade

Summary: In this study, differential protein expression in Leishmania braziliensis strains causing atypical cutaneous lesions compared to strains causing typical lesions was identified. The atypical strains showed upregulation of proteins related to macrophage survival, antimony resistance, and peroxidase activity. Additionally, potential drug and vaccine targets were identified. These findings contribute to the understanding of atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis and provide new insights for treatment and prevention strategies.

Fabiana R. Araujo, Bruno M. Bertassoli, Natalia M. Ocarino, Amanda M. S. Reis, Juneo F. Silva, Lorena G. R. Ribeiro, Rogeria Serakides

Summary: In this study, we evaluated the cultures of femoral chondrocytes from offspring of rats with intrauterine growth restriction induced by maternal hyperthyroidism. We found that maternal hyperthyroidism did not alter the chondrocyte morphology or viability, but significantly reduced the percentage of PAS+ areas, decreased the expression of Col2 and Acan genes, and increased the expression of Sox9 gene.
