Summary: This study compared the diagnostic performances of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and FDG PET/CT in predicting the T-staging of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and found that FDG PET/CT had higher overall accuracy than EUS. The combination of both imaging modalities achieved higher accuracies in differentiating between early and locally advanced disease and determining residual viable tumor. FDG PET/CT was superior to EUS in predicting the (y)pT-stage of ESCC.

Summary: PET/CT imaging can optimize the definition of the target volume in EC. However, there was no significant difference found between GTVs delineated based on visual referencing or deformable registration, whether using volume or position as reference. Therefore, it is feasible to delineate the GTV of primary thoracic EC with reference to diagnostic PET/CT images even in the absence of planning PET-CT images.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive value of 4DST PET/CT versus FDG PET/CT in patients with esophageal cancer. Higher accumulation of 4DST in the primary tumor was associated with shorter OS and PFS, with 4DST SUVmax being the most significant parameter. The study suggests that 4DST PET/CT is useful for predicting prognosis and may be more effective than FDG PET/CT.

Summary: F-18-FDG PET-CT is commonly used for the initial staging of various cancers. This study found a significant association between F-18-FDG uptake in the brain and initial weight loss in patients with esophageal cancer, providing new insights for the diagnosis and treatment of anorexia in cancer patients.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility and accuracy of PET-CT-based radiomics in preoperative prediction of clinical and pathological stages for patients with esophageal cancer (EC). The results showed that combined PET and CT radiomics accurately predicted T stage, lymph node metastasis (LNM), and pathological stage for EC patients.

Summary: A 52-year-old male patient presented with continuous dull pain from the throat to the epigastric region with dysphagia. Imaging tests confirmed the presence of a pedunculated mass inside the esophagus, which was strongly suggestive of esophageal cancer. The mass was surgically excised and histologic examination confirmed the presence of a fibrovascular polyp with chronic ulcerative inflammation.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of omitting PET/CT restaging after nCRT for esophageal cancer based on clinical stage and a prediction model. The results showed that the existing prediction model cannot accurately identify patients at risk for interval distant metastases. However, PET/CT restaging may be omitted in patients with clinical stage II esophageal cancer.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning-based survival prediction framework for evaluating clinical outcomes of esophageal cancer patients before concurrent chemoradiotherapy. The framework consists of a 3D Coordinate Attention Convolutional Autoencoder and an uncertainty-based jointly Optimizing Cox Model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy.

Summary: This study investigated the use of electronic health records (EHR) by gastroenterology and hepatology providers and its impact on work-life balance. The study found that providers used EHR during after-hours and days off, and there were significant variations in the time spent on EHR tasks among different subspecialties. The majority of providers reported being unable to complete EHR tasks during allotted workday time, and EHR tasks were perceived to interfere with family and social life.
