Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a highly complicated metabolic disorder for which there is worldwide effort for the identification of susceptibility genes. Polymorphisms of the Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene are associated with plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels and influence cardiovascular risk. Since insulin resistance is known to be strongly associated with metabolic dyslipidemia, ApoE polymorphisms have been implicated in predisposition to diabetes but the results of the individual studies were inconclusive. We present here a meta-analysis of population-based case-control genetic-association studies relating ApoE polymorphisms and T2DM. We included in the analysis 30 studies, which reported data of ApoE genotypes in 5423 T2DM patients and 8197 healthy unrelated controls. Multivariate and univariate methods suggest a significant role played by the E2 allele, since carriers of the E2 allele were at elevated risk for T2DM (Odds Ratio = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.35). There was no evidence for publication bias or other small-study related bias or significant heterogeneity in the analyses. Cumulative meta-analysis revealed no trend of the effect estimates over time and influential analysis excluded the possibility of a single influential study. E2 allele of ApoE seems to be a moderate risk factor for T2DM. Meta-regression analysis provided some weak evidence that the risk conferred by E2 allele is mediated through altering serum lipid levels (Total Cholesterol, LDL and HDL). Further studies are needed in order to elucidate the metabolic mechanism of this association as well as to study its effects on larger populations. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Association of ITPA gene polymorphisms with adverse effects of AZA/6-MP administration: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Evaggelia Barba, Panagiota I. Kontou, Ioannis Michalopoulos, Pantelis G. Bagos, Georgia G. Braliou

Summary: In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the genetic association of ITPA polymorphisms with adverse effects in patients treated with AZA/6-MP. The results showed that rs1127354 and rs7270101 were associated with neutropenia and other adverse effects in different populations. Stratification analysis also confirmed the association between neutropenia and these two polymorphisms in ALL patients. These findings suggest that ITPA polymorphisms could serve as predictive biomarkers for adverse effects of thiopurine drugs, providing personalized treatment options for ALL patients.

Identifying and Predicting Healthcare Waste Management Costs for an Optimal Sustainable Management System: Evidence from the Greek Public Sector

Anastasios Sepetis, Paraskevi N. Zaza, Fotios Rizos, Pantelis G. Bagos

Summary: The healthcare sector produces a significant amount of waste annually, and it is crucial to have effective waste management systems to protect public health. This study investigated the factors affecting healthcare waste in Greek public hospitals and found that individual-hospital characteristics have an impact on waste generation. The study provides prediction models and suggests specific actions to reduce healthcare waste and associated costs.

Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccination and the Risk of COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Georgia V. Kapoula, Konstantina E. Vennou, Pantelis G. Bagos

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between seasonal influenza vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and its clinical outcomes. The results showed that both influenza and pneumococcal vaccination were associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, there was no evidence to support the association between vaccination and harder endpoints such as ICU admission and death.

School Health Services and Health Education Curricula in Greece: Scoping Review and Policy Plan

Pelagia Soultatou, Stamatis Vardaros, Pantelis G. Bagos

Summary: This article aims to review the evidence generated over the past two decades (2003-2023), identifying the main policy gaps in school health services and health education curricula in Greece and providing a concrete policy plan. The findings suggest that school health services are not school-based but a function of the primary health care system, and health education has a constantly changing position in school curricula. The study also highlights deficiencies in schoolteachers' training, coordination, and leadership. The article provides a set of policy measures towards the reform and integration of school health with health education.

Antioxidant Activity of Leaf Extracts from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni Exerts Attenuating Effect on Diseased Experimental Rats: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Maria Papaefthimiou, Panagiota I. Kontou, Pantelis G. Bagos, Georgia G. Braliou

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of stevia leaf extracts or glycosides on oxidative stress markers in diseased rats. The results demonstrated that stevia leaf extracts restored oxidative stress markers to a higher extent compared to pure glycosides. Rats with diabetes mellitus showed the strongest restorative response to stevia leaf extract administration. These findings suggest that stevia leaf extract may have protective effects against various diseases through its antioxidant properties.

Predicting the Annual Funding for Public Hospitals with Regression Analysis on Hospital's Operating Costs: Evidence from the Greek Public Sector

Paraskevi N. Zaza, Pantelis G. Bagos

Summary: The funding of public hospitals has been a major concern for health systems in recent decades. This study attempts to estimate the necessary funding for public hospitals based on their characteristics and annual output, regardless of the case mix managed by each hospital. Using data from 121 public hospitals in Greece, the study found that hospital type, number of beds, existence of an intensive care unit, number of employees, total number of inpatients, their days of hospitalization, and total number of laboratory tests are the key factors determining the hospital's operating costs. The significant implication of this model is its potential to serve as a basis for a national system of economic evaluation and resource allocation for public health.
