Summary: This review focuses on the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) controlled by nanoparticles. It is found that doping nanoparticles in LCs or patterning nanostructures on substrates can achieve the desired alignment of LCs. Using nanoparticles for LC alignment has similar quality to conventional alignment techniques, but it is less time consuming and cost-effective. Furthermore, nanoparticles can greatly improve the electro-optical properties of LC devices.

Summary: The correlation between the size of nanoparticles, the structure and shape of mesogenic ligands and the ensuing assembly behaviour is not fully understood. In this study, gold nanoparticles of different sizes were synthesized and modified with ligands containing rod-like mesogens. The resulting structures were compared and analyzed, and general rules were derived to assist in designing the soft corona of nanoparticles to achieve desired structures and anisotropy.

Summary: Combining cobalt ferrite nanocrystals with organic ligands featuring a robust photosensitive unit and a source of chirality, nanoparticles are developed to serve as a multifunctional and multiaddressable dopant to modify the properties of liquid crystalline matrices. These nanoparticles, when dispersed in achiral liquid crystals, form chiral supramolecular structures that can respond to UV-light illumination and possess strong magnetic response.

Summary: This paper investigates the electromechanical and magnetomechanical memory effects induced by electric and magnetic fields in liquid crystal doped with aerosil nanoparticles. The systems studied exhibit hysteresis in capacitance-voltage and capacitance-magnetic field dependences. The results suggest potential use of this system as voltage-driven or magnetic field-driven non-volatile memory devices.

Summary: Polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs) are versatile materials with polymer networks providing anchoring energy for liquid crystals. This review details various improvements in PSLCs, including polymer-stabilized nematic, cholesteric, blue phase, smectic, ferroelectric, and antiferroelectric liquid crystals. PSLCs offer multiple functionalities, such as reorientation in smart windows and manual tuning of reflection bandwidth in broadband reflectors. PSBPLCs open up new possibilities for displays, modulators, sensors, lasers, lenses, and photonics applications. Polymer networks in PSFLCs or PSAFLCs enhance grayscale memories for flexible displays and energy-saving smart cards. The remaining challenges and research opportunities in PSLCs are also discussed.

Summary: Liquid crystal-based nanoformulations are efficient in delivering drugs and therapeutics to specific biological sites. Lyotropic liquid crystalline phases (LLCPs) have unique characteristics that make them promising drug delivery systems, offering improved drug loading, stability, and controlled release. Factors such as molecule shape, microsegregation, and chirality play important roles in the formation of these liquid crystalline phases. Additionally, due to their similarity to biological membranes, liquid crystals demonstrate higher bioadhesivity and biocompatibility, making them more effective for targeted drug delivery.

Summary: This study reports a method to achieve uniform homeotropic alignment of liquid crystals using CuInS2 nanoparticles and explores the mechanism behind it. The crystal structures of the nanoparticles were found to depend heavily on the reaction solvents, which in turn anchor the liquid crystal molecules. The achieved homeotropic alignment is thermally stable and can be combined with parallel-aligning technique to achieve variable pretilt angles.
