The objective of the present study was to analyze the level of intramuscular fat (IMF) in loin (musculus longissimus dorsi) and ham (musculus semimembranosus) and the level of subcutaneous fat in these cuts depending on breed, age and the expression level of FABP3 and LEPR genes. The results obtained showed that only the breed influenced on the level of both intramuscular and subcutaneous fat to the same extent (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.001). The age of animals had an effect on fat content of the cuts (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.001) and to a lower extent on the level of IMF in both muscles (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.05). We confirmed highly significant effect of breed and age on the LEPR mRNA abundance-the expression of the this gene increased significantly (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.01) with age and the highest expression was found for the Puawska breed in m. longissimus dorsi and for the Polish Landrace breed in m. semimembranosus. We observed the high correlations between the transcript level of the LEPR gene and the fat content of individual cuts (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.01). The expression level of FABP3 gene influenced the level of IMF (P a parts per thousand currency sign 0.01), but not the level of subcutaneous fat in loin and ham.

Changes of Androstenone Concentrations in Saliva of Boars with Age

Kamila Pokorna, Jaroslav Citek, Petr Dolezal, Martyna Malopolska, Miroslav Tyra, Monika Okrouhla, Katerina Zadinova, Michal Sprysl, Nicole Lebedova, Roman Stupka

Summary: This study focused on finding a non-invasive method to determine boar taint in pigs by evaluating the concentration of androstenone compounds in their saliva. The results showed a correlation between the concentration of salivary androstenone and the age of the boars. This research has significant implications for preventing the occurrence of boar taint in pork.

Examination of D-loop region and DBY gene as tools for identifying hybridisation in alpacas (Vicugna pacos) based on Polish populations

Angelika Podbielska, Katarzyna Piorkowska

Summary: This study examined the genetic diversity and hybridization between alpacas and llamas based on mitochondrial DNA and the DBY gene. The results showed high levels of mitochondrial DNA introgression and evidence of maternal line hybridization. However, no evidence of hybridization was found in the DBY gene. The study also revealed a high level of genetic diversity in alpacas maintained in Poland.

Variations in Fibrinogen-like 1 (FGL1) Gene Locus as a Genetic Marker Related to Fat Deposition Based on Pig Model and Liver RNA-Seq Data

Katarzyna Piorkowska, Kacper Zukowski, Katarzyna Ropka-Molik, Miroslaw Tyra

Summary: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of mutations in the FGL1 gene associated with pig productive traits. More than 50 crucial mutations were identified in the FGL1 gene. The association study showed significant effects of the FGL1 on various traits related to fat deposition. The study supports the theory that liver FGL1 is involved in the fat deposition process and provides a potential genetic marker for pig selection.

Omics as a Tool to Help Determine the Effectiveness of Supplements

Anna Steg, Maria Oczkowicz, Grzegorz Smolucha

Summary: There has been a growing interest in dietary supplements in the past two decades. Despite being one of the less-studied substances released for public consumption, advanced techniques such as genomics have made it possible to assess the impact of these supplements on human transcriptome or proteome. This review introduces the main domains of genomics and focuses on three widely used techniques: NGS, LC-MS, NMR, and their applications in studying dietary supplements.

Summary: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is an irreversible and progressive inflammatory disease. This study aimed to investigate the changes in pro-inflammatory cytokines, antioxidant defense system, and selected serum biochemical parameters in a cerulein-induced CP model in pigs. The study found that repetitive cerulein injections not only led to CP and induced inflammation in the intestine, but also impaired the intestinal barrier.

Influence of Media Composition on the Level of Bovine Satellite Cell Proliferation

Karolina Zygmunt, Agnieszka Otwinowska-Mindur, Katarzyna Piorkowska, Wojciech Witarski

Summary: It is predicted that by 2040, 35% of meat requirements will be provided through in vitro production. This study focused on developing a medium composition that effectively stimulates the proliferation of bovine satellite cells (BSCs) for cultured meat production. The results indicated that bovine serum and the addition of 10 ng/mL bFGF significantly enhanced the proliferation rate of BSCs, while low glucose content promoted the expression of crucial genes involved in satellite cell self-renewal.

The Effect of BSCL2 Gene on Fat Deposition Traits in Pigs

Katarzyna Piorkowska, Julia Sroka, Kacper Zukowski, Karolina Zygmunt, Katarzyna Ropka-Molik, Miroslaw Tyra

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of BSCL2 variants on slaughter and fattening characteristics and meat quality traits. The selection of mutations was based on variant calling analysis and chi test results using subcutaneous fat RNA-seq data. Significant genotype/allele distribution variations between high- and low-fat pigs were observed. The study suggests that variant calling from RNA-seq data may help develop genetic markers for complex pig traits, and the BSCL2 G allele (rs341493267) was found to increase backfat thickness in pigs.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome: A Complex Disease Influenced by Multifactorial Genetic Factors

Monika Stefaniuk-Szmukier, Katarzyna Piorkowska, Katarzyna Ropka-Molik

Summary: Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is an important issue in modern veterinary medicine, linked to the painful hoof laminitis. We have summarized available information on the genetic background, environmental factors, diagnosis, treatment, and management of EMS for both scientific and practical purposes. Clinical presentation in horses includes obesity, lameness, and insulin dysregulation, with ongoing research in regenerative medicine for promising therapies.

Katarzyna Piorkowska, Kacper Zukowski, Katarzyna Ropka-Molik, Miroslaw Tyra

Summary: This study used pigs as an animal model to investigate the potential gene expression regulation by lncRNAs in fat tissue. The results showed that the expression of hundreds of genes, including 8 lncRNAs, was dependent on fat content. It was also discovered that a transcript related to human insulin resistance was identified, and some lncRNAs may play a regulatory role in gene expression.
