This study was designed to investigate the candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the exon's region of bovine diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT1) gene using bioinformatics and experimental methods. A total of 17 SNPs were screened from public data resources and DNA sequencing. Three SNPs (c.572A > G, c.1241C > T and c.1416T > G) of these candidate SNPs were genotyped by created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction (CRS-PCR) methods. The gene-specific SNP markers and their effects on meat and carcass fatness quality traits were evaluated in Chinese commercial cattle. The c.572A > G and c.1416T > G significantly effected on backfat thickness, longissimus muscle area, marbling score, fat color and Warner-Bratzler shear force. No significant association was detected between the c.1241C > T and measured traits. Results from this study suggested that the SNP markers may be effective for the marker-assisted selection of meat and carcass fatness quality traits, and added new evidence that DGAT1 gene is an important candidate gene for the improvement of meat and carcass fatness quality in beef cattle industry.

Summary: The study found that the prostate gland of wild ground squirrels significantly increased in size and weight during the breeding season, with a higher density of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in epithelial cells. However, there was no significant difference in apoptosis staining between breeding and nonbreeding seasons. Key cell cycle regulators mTOR, cyclin-D2, p21, p27, and pRB showed distinct expression patterns between different seasons.

Seasonal expressions of VEGF and its receptors VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 in the prostate of the wild ground squirrels (Spermophilus dauricus)

Summary: The study investigated seasonal differences in the expression and distribution of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors in the prostate of wild ground squirrels, showing correlations with changes in prostate weight, volume, and microvessel number. VEGF and VEGFR2 expression levels may be key regulators of seasonal variations in prostate morphology and function in wild male ground squirrels.

Immunoreactivities of AR, ERα, ERβ and aromatase in the nuptial pad of Chinese brown frog (Rana dybowskii) during pre-hibernation and the breeding period

Zeqi Tang, Yuan Chen, Baolong Ren, Xi Wang, Haolin Zhang, Yingying Han, Zhengrong Yuan, Qiang Weng

Summary: In Chinese brown frogs, the development of the nuptial pad during the breeding period is characterized by larger mucous gland areas and longer epidermal projections. Androgen receptors, estrogen receptors, and aromatase are present in the nuptial pad, with higher protein levels observed during pre-hibernation. Androgens and estrogens directly influence the development and function of the nuptial pad in Chinese brown frogs.

Seasonal expression of extracellular signal regulated kinases in the colon of wild ground squirrels (Spermophilus dauricus)

Yue Song, Xiaoying Yang, Xueying Zhang, Jueyu Zhu, Yixin Chen, Fuli Gao, Haolin Zhang, Yingying Han, Qiang Weng, Zhengrong Yuan

Summary: This study explored the localization and seasonal expression of ERK in the colonic tissue of wild ground squirrels. The results showed that the diameter of the colon lumen enlarged and the number of glandular cells increased in the non-breeding season. Immunohistochemistry results revealed that ERK was expressed in goblet cells and intestinal epithelial cells, with higher expression in the non-breeding season. The study suggested the potential roles of ERK in the adaptation of seasonal changes in the colon of wild ground squirrels.

Estrogen signaling regulates seasonal changes of the prostate in wild ground squirrels (Spermophilus dauricus)

Haolin Zhang, Pengyu Chen, Yuxin Liu, Wenqian Xie, Sijie Fan, Yuchen Yao, Yingying Han, Zhengrong Yuan, Qiang Weng

Summary: This study found that testosterone can be converted to estrogen in the prostate of wild ground squirrels, which affects the function of the prostate gland. The conversion process is likely catalyzed by the enzyme P450arom produced by stromal cells, and regulated by locally expressed estrogen receptors. These findings are important for understanding the seasonal regulation mechanisms in the prostate of wild ground squirrels.

Summary: This study conducted a metagenomic analysis of cecum contents from muskrats in the breeding and non-breeding seasons, revealing differences in gut microbiota structure and function. During the breeding season, the muskrat gut microbiota was enriched in beneficial bacteria and metabolism-related pathways and metabolites. This suggests that the muskrat gut microbiota may adjust seasonally to support reproductive activity and meet the metabolic demands of different seasons.
