Summary: This study examines the latent structure of posttraumatic stress disorder symptomatology and finds that a hierarchical model involving negative affect and anxiety sensitivity can effectively explain the severity of symptom clusters. Targeting negative affect and anxiety sensitivity with specific interventions may offer new avenues for psychotherapeutic interventions.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the risk factors associated with clinically significant worsening of PTSD among Veterans with subthreshold PTSD. The findings revealed that male sex, White race, personality and anxiety disorders, more primary care encounters, physical health disability, and specific baseline PTSD symptom clusters (negative affect and anxious arousal) were associated with symptom worsening. The results suggest that Veterans with subthreshold symptoms seeking treatment for PTSD are at risk for symptom worsening.

Summary: This study found that safety climate has a negative relationship with risk tolerance and risk-taking decisions, independent of individual risk tolerance levels. The consistency of these results across diverse cultures suggests that multinational organizations can foster a consistent safety culture. Future research is needed to validate these findings and explore the influence of organizational policies on safety climate and risk-based decision making.

Summary: Sexual risk taking may be higher among U.S. service members and veterans who have experienced military sexual assault (MSA). This may be due to the increased risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with MSA, which is also linked to sexual risk taking in civilians. Alcohol use plays a mediating role in the relationship between PTSD and sexual risk taking, with higher alcohol use associated with higher sexual risk taking. Male survivors are particularly at risk due to their overall higher alcohol use and engagement in sexual risk taking. Targeting both PTSD symptoms and alcohol use through sex-specific interventions may help reduce sexual risk taking among MSA survivors. Further research is needed to explore the dynamics of these experiences over time and examine other related factors such as alcohol use expectancies and sexual delay discounting.

Summary: Up to 80% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience sleep problems, which are associated with the severity of ASD symptoms. A study found a unidirectional link between baseline ASD symptoms and future sleep problems, but did not find evidence of a bidirectional relationship. No longitudinal association was found between social reciprocity and sleep problems.

Summary: The study found that insomnia symptom severity during clinical visits is associated with heightened suicidality, especially suicidal behavior. Patients with psychiatric disorders who experience insomnia symptoms may be at risk for suicide and should be targeted for suicide prevention efforts.

Summary: This study found that individuals reporting recent suicide attempts were more inclined towards risk-taking and impulsive behavior compared to healthy controls. These results support the notion that suicide attempts are less related to premeditation and more associated with impulsive and spontaneous behavior.

Summary: To comprehensively understand and treat Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), it is important to accurately assess how PTSD symptoms affect people's daily functioning. However, the predominant use of self-report functional impairment measures limits our understanding of this issue. This study found a relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms and subjective and objective measures of functional impairment in the education domain, suggesting the benefit of using both modes of assessment.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of deployment-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on social functioning in families, as well as the mediating roles of emotion regulation and mentalization. The results showed that emotion regulation problems fully mediated the association between PTSD and family dysfunction in Study 1. Maladaptive mentalization was associated with poor child adjustment. Furthermore, there was a significant difference in PTSD symptom severity between Study 1 and Study 2. These findings suggest that social dysfunctioning may only occur when a certain threshold of PTSD severity is reached and emphasize the importance of emotion regulation in clinical practice.

Summary: Chronic stress is a risk factor for dementia, and in this study, it was found that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults. This association remained significant even after adjusting for Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. It highlights the importance of treating PTSD to maintain cognitive function in aging adults.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the individual and combined effects of sleep efficiency and PTSD symptom severity on vascular function in young trauma-exposed women. The results showed that although low sleep efficiency is associated with overall vascular function, the severity of PTSD symptoms is specifically associated with microvascular endothelial function, after controlling for age and body mass index.

Summary: The study found that anxiety level moderates the effects of attention bias modification on change in clinician rated depressive symptoms in patients with depression. The intervention had a greater effect on patients with higher symptom loads, while it was not effective for patients with lower symptom loads. Further research is needed to validate this finding and explore additional moderators for personalized treatment.
