Summary: This study established a five-factor PANSS model from a large multi-ethnic sample, validated its consistency with existing PANSS models through meta-analysis, and evaluated its temporal stability and generalizability to individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) of psychosis. The findings provide crucial evidence for a common PANSS structure that can enhance our understanding of schizophrenia.

Summary: Previous meta-analyses of the BPRS-E and PANSS were combined to analyze a total of 77 factor analyses from 68 studies involving 32,896 individuals. Five consistent factors were identified across all solutions: Positive Symptoms, Affect, Negative Symptoms, Disorganization, and Activation-Mania. The factors were defined by a combination of original BPRS items, additional PANSS items, and additional BPRS-E items. The results were more comprehensive and clearer compared to previous analyses, suggesting future research could benefit from utilizing all items from both scales.

Summary: This study examined the validity and reliability of the Japanese Big Five Scale Short Form (JBFS-SF) in measuring the Big Five personality traits. The results showed that the JBFS-SF has good structural validity and internal consistency in assessing personality characteristics. Therefore, it can be a clinically useful measure for assessing personality traits.

Summary: This study evaluated the categorical response rates, time course of response, and symptom subdomains of response with the combination oral agent KarXT in the treatment of schizophrenia. The results showed that KarXT had significantly higher response rates at each threshold compared to placebo, and response was demonstrated as early as 2 weeks. KarXT also demonstrated improvements in all symptom subdomains compared to placebo.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between Theory of Mind (ToM) deficits and clinical symptoms of schizophrenia using a recent assessment method. The results showed significant correlations between ToM and the positive and cognitive/disorganization dimensions of schizophrenia when controlling for non-social cognitive abilities. The negative symptoms dimension was only significantly correlated with ToM when non-social cognitive abilities were not controlled for.

Summary: The study found that patients with schizophrenia have lower levels of the antioxidant metallothionein-1 (MT-1), which is negatively correlated with disease severity. The decreased concentration of MT-1 is likely to cause a deficiency in antioxidant defense in patients with schizophrenia. Therefore, MT-1 may be a useful biomarker for predicting schizophrenia.

Summary: Add-on sodium benzoate can significantly improve positive symptoms of schizophrenia but has no significant favourable effect on negative symptoms, general psychopathology, and total PANSS score. Extrapyramidal symptoms are significantly higher in the sodium benzoate group compared to the control group. Further studies are needed to evaluate long-term efficacy, safety, and use in specific subgroups of patients.

Summary: This study compared cognitive domains between deficit schizophrenia (DS) and non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients and healthy controls (HC), analyzing relationships between psychopathological dimensions and cognitive domains. The results showed that clinical groups performed poorer than HC groups in various cognitive domains, and DS patients scored poorer than NDS patients in all cognitive domains except for reasoning and problem solving. Psychopathological symptoms were only related to cognitive functions in NDS patients. The findings suggest that the MCCB battery is sensitive to detecting cognitive dysfunctions in both deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in schizophrenia symptoms under different antipsychotic treatments by analyzing data from a multicenter clinical trial. The results identified central and bridge symptoms in the networks that changed over time. Acute antipsychotic treatment altered the network structure, and responsive patients showed lower global strength after treatment compared to resistant patients. The central and bridge symptoms remained prominent across different antipsychotics.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between violent behavior and neurocognitive function in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. The results showed that 10.4% of patients exhibited violent behavior, and these patients had higher symptom and cognitive function scores. Gender, illness duration, smoking, severity of illness, and language ability significantly contributed to the development of violent behavior in schizophrenia patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between neuropeptide S (NPS) levels in the blood and clinical and metabolic parameters during rehabilitation therapy for patients with schizophrenia. Structured rehabilitation therapy significantly reduced the level of schizophrenia disorders defined by various factor models derived from PANSS. Clinical improvement during the rehabilitation therapy was correlated with a significant decrease in NPS serum level.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cognitive functions and resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (rsMRI) signals of the amygdala in patients with schizophrenia. The results showed widespread cognitive impairments and significant abnormalities in the function of the left amygdala in schizophrenia patients. Furthermore, the function of the amygdala did not improve with the improvement of clinical symptoms and cognitive function after conventional treatment.

Summary: The study found that the AA/CC/TT haplotype of ATG16L1 was not significantly associated with susceptibility to AOSD, but patients carrying this haplotype had lower mRNA expression levels of LC3-II, reflecting lower autophagosome formation. Additionally, patients carrying the AA/CC/TT haplotype had a significantly higher proportion of skin rash and a lower proportion of arthritis, which was significantly associated with the systemic pattern of AOSD.

Summary: The study aimed to translate the Crisis Triage Rating Scale into Chinese Mandarin for assessing the need for compulsory hospitalization among Taiwanese psychiatric patients. The results showed acceptable content validity of the scale with a recommended cut-off point of 8 for determining hospitalization or observation in the emergency room.
