Summary: Depressive symptoms are common in patients with first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorders and show significant improvement with long-acting antipsychotic treatment. These symptoms are associated with positive symptoms, better insight, and poorer quality of life, but not with negative symptoms or extrapyramidal symptoms.

Summary: This study replicated the two-factor structure for PANSS negative symptom subdomains in schizophrenia and found that they are closely related and respond similarly to antipsychotic treatment. The experiential subdomain is affected by depression, while the expressive subdomain is affected by extrapyramidal symptoms.

Summary: This study examined the associations between different depressive symptom dimensions among stroke survivors at three timepoints within a year following discharge, finding reciprocal within-person associations between somatic symptoms and anhedonia. These two symptom dimensions may serve as useful indicators of depression risk and intervention targets, highlighting the importance of regularly assessing depressive symptoms for early identification and intervention in stroke survivors.

Summary: The current paper presents three experimental studies exploring how emphasizing different treatment approaches for mental health difficulties influences lay beliefs about the causes and course of illnesses. Psychological treatment may lead to more causal attributions to personal weakness, while biological treatment can weaken confidence in individual control over the illness course. These effects have implications for help-seeking, treatment engagement, and stigma surrounding mental illness.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the progressive trajectories of patterns of dysfunction after diagnosis in patients with schizophrenia. Five stage-specific phenotypes were identified, and dysfunctions shifted from primary and subcortical regions to higher-order cortices. Genetic factors related to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative processes were found to be relevant to schizophrenia progression, suggesting potential targets for interventions.

Summary: The severity level of autism symptoms can change in childhood, with 27% of children experiencing a decrease, 24% experiencing an increase, and 49% remaining stable. Decreases in severity were more common in early childhood, while increases were more prominent in middle childhood. Girls were more likely to experience a decrease in symptoms than boys. Parental characteristics were found to be related to whether a child experienced a decrease or increase in severity.

Summary: This study found that individuals with psychosis are more likely to be born and live in deprived and densely populated environments. Trajectories of exposure to deprivation and population density are associated with the risk of psychotic disorders, with greater exposure to deprivation during upbringing increasing the risk of serious mental illness. However, upward mobility can mitigate this association. After diagnosis, people with serious mental illness are more likely to continue living in deprived areas, indicating issues of social immobility.

Summary: This study investigated trajectories of depressive symptomatology in American adults over 25 years and found that depressive symptoms follow a "U-shaped" pattern across the life course. Additionally, a substantial sub-population with persistently high depressive symptoms over adulthood was identified, with women, race/ethnic minorities, and individuals of lower socioeconomic position being more likely to belong to this group.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether improvement in antenatal depression symptoms was associated with a reduction in preterm birth among pregnant individuals receiving mental health care. The findings showed that pregnant individuals with improved antenatal depression symptoms had a lower incidence of preterm birth. These results underscore the importance of incorporating mental health care into routine obstetric care.

Summary: The objective of this study was to test the association between perfluorinated alkylate substance (PFAS) exposures and body weight increases in a dietary intervention study. The results showed that elevated plasma concentrations of PFOA and PFHxS were significantly associated with increased weight gain, exceeding the effects of different diet groups. The findings suggest that obesogenic PFASs may contribute to the obesity pandemic.

Summary: The study found that Mind My Mind (MMM) cognitive behavioral therapy is effective in treating common emotional and behavioral mental health problems in youth, but not all individuals respond satisfactorily to treatment. The analysis revealed that youths with any mental disorder at baseline, comorbidity, and longer duration of untreated mental health problems showed superior treatment benefits. This highlights the importance of community-based programs like MMM for youth with substantial mental health problems.

Summary: Denmark has agreed on a 10-year plan for psychiatry, which was developed collaboratively by the Danish Health Authority and the Danish Authority for Social Services and Housing, involving various stakeholders. The government has recently proposed an investment plan to increase the overall budget in Danish regions and municipalities by nearly 20 percent over 10 years. The need for improvement in psychiatric services was emphasized by epidemiological research showing shortened life expectancy and high disease burden among individuals with mental disorders. The Psychiatry Alliance, a unified organization consisting of user organizations, trade unions, and scientific societies in the field of mental health, took a proactive approach to influence politicians and media, resulting in significant impact.
