Elemental sulfur-molybdenum disulfide composites for high-performance cathodes for Li-S batteries: the impact of interfacial structures on electrocatalytic anchoring of polysulfides

Vladimir P. Oleshko, Eddie Chang, Chad R. Snyder, Christopher L. Soles, Saya Takeuchi, Tristan S. Kleine, Philip T. Dirlam, Jeffrey Pyun

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced cathodes for Li-S batteries with sulfur-MoS2 composites, revealing that 3D interfacial structures are critical in maintaining cathode integrity, electrocatalytic binding of polysulfides, and reducing charge transfer resistance during cycling. The research demonstrates the importance of mechanically activated defective 2H-MoS2 particulates and aggregated conducting nanocarbons in achieving the remarkable performance of extended cycle lifetimes and high reversible capacity.

Carbon-Nanotube-Encapsulated-Sulfur Cathodes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: Integrated Computational Design and Experimental Validation

Summary: A unique carbon-nanotube-encapsulated-sulfur (S@CNT) cathode material with optimum open-ring sizes on the CNT walls was designed to mitigate lithium-polysulfides shuttle in lithium-sulfur batteries. By controlling the oxidation parameters, the optimum open-ring sizes were successfully achieved, leading to improved cycling stability of the batteries.

Emergent Moire Phonons Due to Zone Folding in WSe2-WS2 Van der Waals Heterostructures

Hsun-Jen Chuang, Madeleine Phillips, Kathleen M. McCreary, Darshana Wickramaratne, Matthew R. Rosenberger, Vladimir P. Oleshko, Nicholas Proscia, Mark Lohmann, Dante J. O'Hara, Paul D. Cunningham, C. Stephen Hellberg, Berend T. Jonker

Summary: The appearance of moire Raman modes from nearly aligned WSe2-WS2 van der Waals heterostructures in a certain frequency range indicates sensitivity to twist angle and strong Raman intensity modulation dependent on excitation energy and temperature. These modes exhibit identical frequencies for a given small twist angle and are a consequence of the large moire length scale resulting in zone-folded phonon modes that are Raman active.

Dielectric Interface Engineering for High-Performance Monolayer MoS2 Transistors via TaOx Interfacial Layer

Hao-Yu Lan, Vladimir P. Oleshko, Albert V. Davydov, Joerg Appenzeller, Zhihong Chen

Summary: This study reports a new dielectric interface engineering approach using a relatively high-kappa TaOx interfacial layer to improve the performance of monolayer MoS2 transistors. The TaOx layer not only minimizes active interface trap states, but also acts as an efficient doping layer. This research paves the way for high-performance logic devices based on 2-D materials.

Electronic excitations in monoclinic hafnia as studied by spatially and momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy and ab initio density functional theory calculations

Sz-Chian Liou, Guo-Jiun Shu, Vladimir P. Oleshko, Hwanhui Yun, Xiang -Lin Huang, Hsin-An Chen, Wei -Tin Chen

Summary: Monoclinic hafnia (m-HfO2) is studied to investigate its electronic excitations using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and first-principles calculations. Experimental results confirmed the phase purity and crystallinity of m-HfO2. Surface plasmons, volume plasmons, and surface exciton polaritons were observed, and their characteristics were confirmed by EFTEM-SI and energy versus momentum (E-k) maps. The anisotropic shape of volume plasmons was not observed, and a semicore Hf 5p plasmon involving multiplet resonant processes was identified at 48 eV energy loss. All these excitations displayed parabolic dispersion behavior with an energy shift of 1-3 eV.

Quantification of Unsupported Thin-Film X-ray Spectra Using Bulk Standards

Nicholas W. M. Ritchie, Andrew Herzing, Vladimir P. Oleshko

Summary: This study presents a quantification model that uses standard X-ray spectra collected from bulk materials to determine the composition and mass thickness of single-layer and multilayer unsupported thin films. The model can iteratively solve for single layers and can be extended to multilayer films. Additional information or assumptions can be added to solve cases where an element is present in multiple layers. The algorithm is well suited for energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry and has been implemented in the Open Source application DTSA-II.
