Summary: This study found that propolis essential oil (PEO) has antibacterial effects on cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) by decreasing bacterial viability within the biofilm and damaging the biofilm structure. The underlying mechanisms may involve inhibiting bacterial adhesion and glucosyltransferases (GTFs) activity, resulting in decreased production of extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs). Additionally, PEO showed no cytotoxicity on normal oral epithelial cells.

Summary: In Brazil, studies have shown that Libidibia ferrea is commonly used in folk medicine as an antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-adherence activities of extracts and compounds from this plant against Streptococcus mutans. The results demonstrated strong antimicrobial and anti-adhesive properties in inhibiting the growth and adhesion of S. mutans.

Summary: Dental caries is a common chronic disease worldwide. This study found that small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) play a role in regulating manganese uptake and virulence gene control in Streptococcus mutans. RNA sequencing revealed differentially transcribed sRNAs, and some of these sRNAs were found to be associated with metal ion transport, growth management, and oxidative stress tolerance. These findings are important for understanding the pathogenesis of dental caries.
