Rapid pathogen detection using an organic field effect transistor

A pentacene field effect transistor (FET) for the detection of DNA from pathogenic organisms is fabricated. The pentacene FET is an excellent candidate for disposable sensor applications because of its low-cost fabrication process and fast detection. Aviral (lambda-phage) genomic DNA was chosen as a model organism and its presence was successfully detected by probe DNA hybridisation on the pentacene layer. The process produced a dramatic change in the channel current and field-effect mobility of the devices. This result demonstrates the feasibility of our device as a disposable sensor for DNA hybridisation and can lead to the development of a biosensor for rapid pathogen detection.

Summary: Takotsubo syndrome (TS) has a lower short-term mortality risk compared to ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) but higher than non-STEMI (NSTEMI). TS has a similar risk of acute heart failure to STEMI but a lower risk of cardiogenic shock. Smoking is an independent predictor of mortality in TS patients compared to those with STEMI and NSTEMI.

Summary: Although cTnT and cTnI are expressed to similar amount in cardiac tissue, cTnI often reach ten-times higher peak levels compared to cTnT in patients with myocardial necrosis such as in acute myocardial infarction (MI). In contrast, levels of cTnI were lower than cTnT in COVID-19 patients, indicating that the release of cardiac troponin has a different cause in COVID-19 patients.

On-Line PAT Monitoring of Lucentis in the Fermenter Using Aptamer-Based Capacitive Microfluidic Chip Biosensor

Summary: In this study, an aptamer-based PDMS/glass microfluidic chip biosensor was developed for the detection of Lucentis in fermenters. The chip demonstrated better detection limits and linear range compared to the HPLC-based method. Real sample analysis showed a significant correlation between the microchip biosensor and HPLC-based detection method. The chip is miniaturized, selective, specific, interference-free, label-free, rapid, and reusable, making it suitable for on-line PAT monitoring in Lucentis production.

The role of admission electrocardiogram in predicting outcome in patients hospitalized for COVID-19

Summary: This study aimed to determine if abnormal admission electrocardiogram (ECG) predicts the need for intensive care treatment or in-hospital death within 30 days in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The study found that abnormal admission ECG was associated with an increased risk of treatment at intensive care unit or in-hospital death within 30 days and could be considered a high-risk criterion in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Differences between cardiac troponin I vs. T according to the duration of myocardial ischaemia

Summary: The study found that after brief periods of cardiac ischemia, both high-sensitive cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) and high-sensitive cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) increased similarly. However, longer periods of ischemia that caused substantial necrosis led to an increase in the hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio, indicating that this ratio may be an indicator of ischemia-induced myocardial necrosis.

Summary: This study compared the electrocardiograms (ECGs) of STE-TS and STEMI patients and found that the admission ECG of STE-TS was more similar to LAD STEMI and reciprocal ST depression was less common in STE-TS compared to overall STEMI. ST segment changes predicted life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia or death in STEMI but not in STE-TS.
