Summary: The infrared spectral characteristics of organic-rich acid residues from Ryugu samples returned by the JAXA Hayabusa2 mission are similar to unheated carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, but with a higher abundance of methyl and methylene functional groups and a higher CH2/CH3 ratio. Additionally, two distinct outlier carbonaceous phases are identified, one with N-H functional groups likely indicating amides, and a second phase with lower nitrogen content. These infrared characteristics suggest the pristine nature of the freshly collected samples and provide insights into the near-surface chemistry of the parent asteroid.

Summary: Samples returned by the Hayabusa2 mission from asteroid Ryugu revealed that the asteroid is composed of materials consistent with CI chondrites and some types of space weathering. The dominant mineralogy of the samples is a fine-grained mixture of Mg-rich saponite and serpentine, magnetite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, dolomite, and Fe-bearing magnesite. In addition to these major minerals, several rare or unreported minerals among CI chondrites were also identified. The fine-grained fraction of the samples is best suited for investigating impact-induced space weathering.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of iron nitride on the surface of the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu, suggesting the possibility of inorganic nitrogen fixation. It is likely that the iron nitride formed due to impacts of nitrogen-rich micrometeoroids from the outer Solar System, indicating a flux of nitrogen-rich dust in the inner Solar System. The findings imply that there is a greater amount of nitrogen available for planetary formation and prebiotic reactions in the inner Solar System than previously recognized.

Summary: The Hayabusa2 mission collected samples from the Ryugu asteroid, providing an opportunity to study the redox state of carbonaceous asteroids and evaluate the redox state of primitive rocks in the solar system. Through various spectroscopic techniques, it was found that iron in Ryugu samples mainly exists in magnetite, clay minerals, and sulfides, similar to CI chondrites. However, the redox ratios in Ryugu samples are lower, suggesting terrestrial alteration of CI meteorites.
