Background and Aims. The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common and complex disorder that consists of various abnormalities, including dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension and hyperglycemia. We investigated the relationships between the levels of advanced protein oxidation products (AOPPs), the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) in MetS patients. Methods. A total of 55 patients (37 women, 18 men) with MetS and 20 healthy controls (14 women, 6 men) with a body mass index (BMI) less than 25 kg/m(2) were enrolled in the study. Colorimetric methods were used to determine the levels of AOPPs, the TAC, and the PAB. Results. AOPP, TAC, and PAB values were significantly higher in patients with MetS than in control subjects (p<0.001, p = 0.050, and p<0.001, respectively). A positive correlation was observed between the AOPP levels and the glucose, triglyceride, insulin and HOMA-IR levels. PAB values also exhibited significant positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure and fibrinogen levels. Logistic regression analysis revealed that higher serum PAB values were positively and independently associated with the MetS (odds ratio: 1.110; 95% confidence interval: 1.006-1.224; P<0.37). Conclusions. Increased AOPP levels and higher PAB values are likely to be a result of oxidative stress, a condition in which an imbalance occurs between the production and inactivation of reactive oxygen species. In addition, it appears that serum PAB values may accurately reflect the levels of oxidative stress in MetS patients. Crown Copyright (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Srikanth Karnati, Gulcan Guntas, Ranjithkumar Rajendran, Sergey Shityakov, Marcus Hoering, Gerhard Liebisch, Djuro Kosanovic, Sueleyman Erguen, Michiaki Nagai, Carola Y. Foerster

Summary: Takotsubo syndrome, also known as transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome, is a novel acute cardiac syndrome characterized by transient abnormal left ventricular function. The exact cause of this syndrome is unknown, but stress hormones and inflammation are believed to play a role. A recent study analyzed the lipid profiles of Takotsubo syndrome patients and found significant differences compared to a control group. Computational analysis linked these altered lipids to pro-inflammatory cytokines and identified potential mechanistic pathways involving TNF alpha and IL-6. The study provides valuable insights into the lipidome of Takotsubo syndrome patients and may aid in pre-diagnosis and prevention of the disease.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and systemic inflammatory markers NLR, LMR, and PLR in newborns. The results suggest that vitamin D deficiency in newborns may be associated with inflammation and changes in NLR, LMR, and PLR. NLR and other hematologic indices may serve as non-invasive, simple, easily measurable, and cost-effective markers of inflammation in newborns.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between SII, NLR, and PLR with clinical findings of RSV infection in children with LRTI. The results showed that CRP levels were higher in RSV positive cases, while NLR, PLR, and SII were lower in these cases. CRP performed better than other blood parameters as a marker. Determining the cause of the disease using these parameters can aid in disease management and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of ranolazine on hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) and oxidative stress in H9c2 cardiomyocyte cells. The results showed that ranolazine can protect cardiomyocytes from oxidative damage induced by methotrexate (MTX) by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant capacity markers. The antioxidant properties of ranolazine may contribute to these protective effects.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the monocyte count and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and their ratio in patients with deep venous thrombosis and investigate whether this ratio can indicate thrombus burden in terms of thrombus location. The results showed a significantly higher monocyte/high-density lipoprotein ratio in deep venous thrombosis patients compared to the control group. This ratio was associated with thrombus location and the number of vein segments involved.

The Epidemiology of Deficiency of Vitamin B12 in Preschool Children in Turkey

Yusuf Elgormus, Omer Okuyan, Seyma Dumur, Ugurcan Sayili, Hafize Uzun

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the vitamin B12 levels and risk factors in preschool children. The results showed that B12 deficiency was significantly higher in the 6-11-month group compared to other age groups. Children with insufficient B12 levels had higher homocysteine levels. There was no significant difference in weekly dairy and meat consumption levels among different age groups. The study concluded that low vitamin B12 levels and increased homocysteine levels could be important risk factors in preschool children, especially those starting to consume additional foods from the age of 6 months.

Upper small intestine microbiome in obesity and related metabolic disorders: A new field of investigation

Summary: The study of the gut microbiome is crucial for understanding and treating metabolic diseases. While research on the fecal microbiome has provided valuable insights, relying solely on this may not be enough to draw comprehensive conclusions. The microbiome in the proximal part of the small intestine may play a significant role in metabolic regulation, but further exploration is needed due to limited accessibility.

Glucocorticoids and intrauterine programming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Ze Chen, Li -Ping Xia, Lang Shen, Dan Xu, Yu Guo, Hui Wang

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that NAFLD has an intrauterine origin, with adverse prenatal environments and glucocorticoid exposure playing a crucial role in the developmental programming of fetal hepatic lipid metabolism. The offspring's glucocorticoid-insulin-like growth factor 1 (GC-IGF1) axis is programmed in utero, leading to postnatal catch-up growth and disrupted glucose and lipid metabolism, increasing susceptibility to NAFLD. Mismatch between intrauterine and postnatal environments can further disturb the programmed endocrine axes and accelerate the onset of NAFLD.

CCDC92 deficiency ameliorates podocyte lipotoxicity in diabetic kidney disease

Fuwen Zuo, Youzhao Wang, Xinlei Xu, Ruihao Ding, Wei Tang, Yu Sun, Xiaojie Wang, Yan Zhang, Jichao Wu, Yusheng Xie, Min Liu, Ziying Wang, Fan Yi

Summary: This study investigates the role of CCDC92 in the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The expression of CCDC92 was found to increase in kidney biopsies from patients with DKD and was correlated with glomerular lipid accumulation. Animal studies further confirmed the induction of CCDC92 in the kidney, particularly in podocytes, and the podocyte-specific deletion of Ccdc92 ameliorated podocyte injury and lipid deposition. CCDC92 was shown to promote podocyte lipotoxicity through ABCA1 signaling-mediated lipid homeostasis. Therefore, CCDC92 may serve as a potential biomarker of podocyte injury in DKD and targeting CCDC92 could be an innovative therapeutic strategy for DKD patients.

Brown adipose tissue-derived metabolites and their role in regulating metabolism

Khanyisani Ziqubu, Phiwayinkosi Dludla, Sihle E. Mabhida, Babalwa U. Jack, Susanne Keipert, Martin Jastroch, Sithandiwe E. Mazibuko-Mbeje

Summary: The discovery and revival of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult humans have opened up new possibilities for treating obesity and metabolic diseases. BAT not only plays a role in generating heat, but also secretes signaling molecules known as batokines, which regulate overall metabolism. This review highlights the importance of BAT-derived metabolites in controlling thermogenesis, substrate metabolism, and other biological processes, as well as their potential to alleviate obesity and related metabolic complications.
