The association between premature pubarche (PP) and metabolic syndrome is controversial and not supported by some authors The aim of this study was to determine insulin resistance syndrome, plasma adiponectin, and fatty acid profile in PP girls to discern potential confounder variables and markers of metabolic disturbances We studied 22 prepubertal girls with a diagnosis of PP and 20 healthy controls who differed in body mass index (BMI) (19.33 +/- 0 71 vs 17 30 +/- 0 60). We evaluated insulin resistance syndrome components and postprandial response of adiponectin, nonesterified fatty acids, and fatty acid profile after consumption of a standardized breakfast No lipid disturbances were detected in the PP group High-density lipoprotein to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio tended to be lower in PP girls (P = .052), but this effect disappeared when data were adjusted for both BMI and age (P = 480) Insulin levels tended to be higher at 2 hours in PP girls, who showed significantly higher C-peptide area under the curve In contrast, adiponectin at 3 hours after the meal and postprandial adiponectin area under the curve were significantly lower The PP girls showed significantly higher percentages of eicosapentaenoic acid in total plasma and plasma phospholipids. No differences were found in the postprandial fatty acid clearance rate In conclusion, PP girls and controls differed in postprandial plasma adiponectin response and in postprandial plasma C-peptide response alter both BMI and age adjustment Cholesterol plasma disturbances were mainly attributable to their higher BMI, although n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were higher because of the PP (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

The Metabolic Impact of Two Different Parenteral Nutrition Lipid Emulsions in Children after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Lipidomics Investigation

Oscar Daniel Rangel-Huerta, Maria Jose de la Torre-Aguilar, Maria Dolores Mesa, Katherine Flores-Rojas, Juan Luis Perez-Navero, Maria Auxiliadora Baena-Gomez, Angel Gil, Mercedes Gil-Campos

Summary: The study investigated the effects of parenteral nutrition using fish oil-based lipid emulsion or classic soybean oil emulsion on the lipidomic profile in plasma of children after HSCT. It found that the fish oil-based lipid emulsion had impacts on multiple lipid subclasses, while the classic soybean oil emulsion did not. Furthermore, data integration analysis revealed connections across different data blocks that aid in interpreting the impact of the lipid emulsions on metabolic health.

Ortega, Maria Dolores Ruiz-Lopez, Angel Gil, Gregorio Varela-Moreiras

Summary: The study evaluated the sugar intake levels and dietary sources in Spanish children consuming different types of milk. It found that younger children had higher added sugar contributions to their total energy intake and lower adherence to recommendations. The main food sources of intrinsic sugars were milk and dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and cereals, while milk and dairy products, sugars and sweets, bakery products, and cereals were the main sources of added sugars. The results emphasize the importance of monitoring sugar consumption in infants and the need for simplified recommendations and labeling of products.

Prepubertal Children With Metabolically Healthy Obesity or Overweight Are More Active Than Their Metabolically Unhealthy Peers Irrespective of Weight Status: GENOBOX Study

Summary: The study of the gut microbiome is crucial for understanding and treating metabolic diseases. While research on the fecal microbiome has provided valuable insights, relying solely on this may not be enough to draw comprehensive conclusions. The microbiome in the proximal part of the small intestine may play a significant role in metabolic regulation, but further exploration is needed due to limited accessibility.

Glucocorticoids and intrauterine programming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Ze Chen, Li -Ping Xia, Lang Shen, Dan Xu, Yu Guo, Hui Wang

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that NAFLD has an intrauterine origin, with adverse prenatal environments and glucocorticoid exposure playing a crucial role in the developmental programming of fetal hepatic lipid metabolism. The offspring's glucocorticoid-insulin-like growth factor 1 (GC-IGF1) axis is programmed in utero, leading to postnatal catch-up growth and disrupted glucose and lipid metabolism, increasing susceptibility to NAFLD. Mismatch between intrauterine and postnatal environments can further disturb the programmed endocrine axes and accelerate the onset of NAFLD.

CCDC92 deficiency ameliorates podocyte lipotoxicity in diabetic kidney disease

Fuwen Zuo, Youzhao Wang, Xinlei Xu, Ruihao Ding, Wei Tang, Yu Sun, Xiaojie Wang, Yan Zhang, Jichao Wu, Yusheng Xie, Min Liu, Ziying Wang, Fan Yi

Summary: This study investigates the role of CCDC92 in the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The expression of CCDC92 was found to increase in kidney biopsies from patients with DKD and was correlated with glomerular lipid accumulation. Animal studies further confirmed the induction of CCDC92 in the kidney, particularly in podocytes, and the podocyte-specific deletion of Ccdc92 ameliorated podocyte injury and lipid deposition. CCDC92 was shown to promote podocyte lipotoxicity through ABCA1 signaling-mediated lipid homeostasis. Therefore, CCDC92 may serve as a potential biomarker of podocyte injury in DKD and targeting CCDC92 could be an innovative therapeutic strategy for DKD patients.

Brown adipose tissue-derived metabolites and their role in regulating metabolism

Khanyisani Ziqubu, Phiwayinkosi Dludla, Sihle E. Mabhida, Babalwa U. Jack, Susanne Keipert, Martin Jastroch, Sithandiwe E. Mazibuko-Mbeje

Summary: The discovery and revival of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult humans have opened up new possibilities for treating obesity and metabolic diseases. BAT not only plays a role in generating heat, but also secretes signaling molecules known as batokines, which regulate overall metabolism. This review highlights the importance of BAT-derived metabolites in controlling thermogenesis, substrate metabolism, and other biological processes, as well as their potential to alleviate obesity and related metabolic complications.
