Summary: Febrile seizures, classified as short or prolonged, are common in childhood. Prolonged febrile seizures have been linked to temporal lobe epilepsy, and animal models have shown that they can alter neuronal function. Na+/K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase have been suggested to play a role in this process. The study found that hyperthermia-induced seizures increased the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase, and also increased the protein level of the AMPA subunit GluR1.

Summary: A newly discovered trimeric procyanidin C1, found in Viola odorata root extract, was shown to strongly inhibit Na+,K+-ATPase activity. Leaf and seed extracts of the plant showed no significant inhibitory effects on the enzyme. Through compound screening and bioactivity assessment, the active components of V. odorata root extract were identified.

Summary: The study found that the specific ion effects of Na+ and K+ were different on the growth of Ulva lactuca. Ulva lactuca showed better growth with high concentrations of NaCl, while KCl might have adverse effects on photosynthesis and cell wall. Transcription of PM H+-ATPase was induced specifically by high concentrations of Na+, while the induction of PM-Na+/K+-ATPase-like alone could not improve the growth of KCl-treated Ulva lactuca.

Summary: Treatment for inherited neurodevelopmental disorders often involves repairing neural circuitry rather than addressing the root metabolic cause, offering potential therapeutic approaches. Research has found that metabolic dysfunction leads to excessive NMDAR activity, and restoring synaptic function may ameliorate neurodevelopmental and cognitive deficits.

Summary: Improving crop salt tolerance is crucial for meeting future food demands in the face of climate change. This study reveals that glycine betaine (GB) plays a critical role in enhancing maize salt tolerance by regulating plant Na+ homeostasis. Treatment with GB significantly improved the growth of maize plants under non-stressed and salinity-stressed conditions, maintained chlorophyll fluorescence properties, and increased antioxidant enzyme activity. GB reduced Na+ accumulation in plants primarily through increasing Na+ efflux and decreasing Na+/K+ ratio. The study also found that GB enhances PM H+-ATPases gene transcription and protein activities, contributing to improved maize salt tolerance.

Summary: In this study, oils extracted from Cymbopogon citratus, Lantana camara, Artemisia camphorata, and Imperata cylindrica plants were used as potential insecticides against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae. Among these oils, L. camara oil demonstrated the highest effect. The activities of enzymes and toxicity of the oils against S. oryzae were evaluated, with interesting findings on the inhibition percentages of key enzymes.

Summary: Potassium (K) application can alleviate cotton salt stress and improve fiber length and the maximum velocity of fiber elongation. It also increases enzyme activities and osmolyte contents. The effect of K application on fiber elongation decreases with increasing salt stress, with CCRI-79 responding to K application better than Simian 3.

Summary: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a lifestyle-related disease that poses an increasing threat worldwide. This study investigates the role of CD44 in the development of hepatic fibrosis, particularly in the proliferation of bile duct epithelium. The experiment used a rat model fed a choline-deficient, methionine-lowered, L-amino-acid diet and found that the expression of CD44 protein significantly increased throughout the experimental period. CD44 protein was mainly present in the bile duct epithelium, which overlapped with the area of hepatic fibrosis.
