The electrochemical reduction of N-(2-nitro-4-R-phenyl)pyridinium chlorides (R = CF3, CN, CO2Et) at a lead cathode in HCl/(PrOH)-O-i/H2O affords the corresponding 7-R-pyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazoles in 70-94% yields.
