Babesiosis is the disease caused by infection of the erythrocytes of mammals by Babesia species, which are Apicomplexa protozoa belonging to the suborder Piroplasmidea and the family Babesiidae. They are different from the Theileriidae, which can also infect white blood cells and endothelial cells. Babesiosis is one of the most important tick-borne infectious diseases of domestic and wild mammals and still poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for veterinary practitioners around the world. It is an increasing problem worldwide because of the expansion of tick habitats and the increased mobility of animals, which promote the spread of parasites into new geographical areas. Babesia species can, exceptionally, infect humans, especially splenectomised or immunocompromised individuals. The majority of human cases involve B. microti, a parasite of rodents, but human infections may also be caused by B. divergens, which infects cattle, or by Babesia related to B. odocoilei, which infect cervids. The majority of new developments, in regard to taxonomy, epidemiology, pathogenesis and control, concern canine babesiosis, whereas piroplasmosis in horses or cattle retains the classical description, therefore the focus of this article will be on infection in dogs.

World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAA VP) guidelines for studies evaluating the efficacy of parasiticides in reducing the risk of vector-borne pathogen transmission in dogs and cats

Domenico Otranto, Filipe Dantas-Torres, Josephus J. Fourie, Vincenzo Lorusso, Marie Varloud, Luigi Gradoni, Jason Drake, Thomas Geurden, Ronald Kaminsky, Anja R. Heckeroth, Bettina Schunack, Matthias Pollmeier, Frederic Beugnet, Peter Holdsworth

Summary: These guidelines aim to provide a thorough review of the efficacy of parasiticides in reducing transmission of vector-borne pathogens to dogs and cats, offering detailed recommendations for planning and implementation of related studies. Currently, prevention of VBP transmission in companion animals is achieved through products that repel or kill arthropods, with guidelines emphasizing the need for further basic research on VBP transmission times.

Efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) in preventing the transmission of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis to sheltered dogs in a highly endemic area

Rossella Panarese, Roberta Iatta, Jairo Alfonso Mendoza-Roldan, Andrea Zatelli, Frederic Beugnet, Domenico Otranto

Summary: The study results showed that afoxolaner is effective in reducing the transmission of D. immitis and L. infantum, with a significant difference in seasonal incidence only observed for D. immitis infection. Preventive measures are recommended throughout the year in endemic areas to reduce the risk of pathogen transmission.

Summary: The study demonstrated high efficacy of afoxolaner and fipronil/permethrin against adult H. marginatum ticks in dogs, with at least 97% efficacy at 48 hours and at least 99% efficacy at 72 hours, lasting for at least five weeks.

A hierarchical Bayesian approach for incorporating expert opinions into parametric survival models: A case study of female Ixodes ricinus ticks exposed to various temperature and relative humidity conditions

Phrutsamon Wongnak, Severine Bord, Sophie Donnet, Thierry Hoch, Frederic Beugnet, Karine Chalvet-Monfray

Summary: This study proposed a framework integrating expert opinions into a Bayesian Parametric Survival Model (B-PSM) to study the effects of continuous explanatory variables on the survival time of Ixodes ricinus ticks. The results showed variation in expert opinions, with most experts agreeing on the effects of abiotic variables but lacking confidence in the interaction effect. Pooling and averaging methods were used to handle the variation in opinions, each with its advantages and limitations in capturing expert consensus.

Efficacy of afoxolaner for the treatment of ear mite infestation under field conditions

Rossella Panarese, Roberta Iatta, Riccardo Paolo Lia, Wilfried Lebon, Frederic Beugnet, Domenico Otranto

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of oral administrations of afoxolaner against ear mites in naturally infested dogs, finding that two doses were able to completely cure the infestation in field conditions. No adverse events related to the treatment were recorded in the study group.

Habitat suitability map of Ixodes ricinus tick in France using multi-criteria analysis

Isabelle Lebert, Severine Bord, Christine Saint-Andrieux, Eva Cassar, Patrick Gasqui, Frederic Beugnet, Karine Chalvet-Monfray, Sophie O. Vanwambeke, Gwenael Vourc'h, Magalie Rene-Martellet

Summary: Using a knowledge-based method, this study mapped the habitat suitability for I. ricinus ticks in France and Corsica, taking into account climate, land cover, altitude, and density of wild ungulates. The results showed that most areas of France and Corsica are suitable for I. ricinus, with particularly suitable habitats in central, north-eastern and south-western France. The study also demonstrated the value of multi-criteria decision analysis in estimating tick abundance and highlighting priority areas for preventive measures.

Cercopithifilaria spp. in ticks of companion animals from Asia: new putative hosts and vectors

Marcos Antonio Bezerra-Santos, Lucia Oliveira de Macedo, Viet-Linh Nguyen, Ranju R. S. Manoj, Younes Laidoudi, Maria Stefania Latrofa, Frederic Beugnet, Domenico Otranto

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of Cercopithifilaria species in ticks collected from dogs and cats in Asian countries. Cercopithifilaria bainae was found to be the most prevalent species. Molecular detection of C. bainae in ticks collected from cats and R. haemaphysaloides ticks was reported for the first time. This suggests that the biological cycle of C. bainae may involve other tick species and domestic cats. Further studies on the role of these hosts are needed.
